Lol spent all weekend on this same type of job, i just put a new HU in.
you start where you little got (what i call money bin) pull that out then put your auto in to drive, with handbrake on ;) and then you can pull that whole section up from where the money holder was.
The next bit is a *****, you get you hand in behind where your cup holders where and push against that little comparment under where your climate controls are, its a bit of a hard one to get out, i had a bit of plastic strip that i inserted into the gap between climate control dash peice and the compartment below to pull it out and pulled on both at the same time. then you pull out the climate control/radio section, it just pulled off for me. it was hard but i got it out, just dont snap it when you do it. hope this helps a bit.

Cheers for the instructions! I really hope I dont have to unscrew the section below the steering wheel, but I have a feeling I probably will have to. Oh well, actually have to buy my headunit before this is an issue...

Heya,

lietkynes actually gave a pretty accurate description of the basics, but i guess you'd have to have done it once to know...

I did it on my 2005 KW Verada, so your mileage may vary, but I believe that it should be fundamentally the same. I started with removing the coinbox in front of the armrest/console box (which on TL/TW Magnas houses the switches for power windows. No I don't know anything about the wiring of Magna power windows, but it should unplug easily.)

The whole gearshift surround can then be pulled out starting from the back (where the armrest/console box is) and working your way forward to the cupholders. Once the back is loose, pull the whole piece back as the front end is held down by tabs.

Then comes the tricky bit: you have to remove the storage box under the climate control. You'll have to get your hand around the box and pull it out towards you. Not up, not down, but straight out. Have some bandages handy for the inevitable nicks and cuts - there's lots of sharp edges down there (but then, my hands aren't small).

Once you've got that out, you can tackle the centre console panel, which houses the climate control, CD player and even surrounds the clock and a/c vents. Start by pulling it out from the bottom edge, under the climate control. Work your way up the panel to the a/c vents and clock. The climate control dials and the vents are attached to this panel, but the CD player is not (the CD player it stays in the dash while you pull the panel off around it.)

Once the whole panel comes loose, unplug the climate control module (a flashlight is handy), the air temp sensor, and the hazard flasher switch wiring.

On my car, the a/c vent grilles actually came off with the centre console panel, but were slightly misaligned. You've got to make sure the vent grilles snap back into place or you won't be able to fit the centre console panel back in again.

Anyway, once the panel is off, you should be able to remove the 4 screws holding the CD player mounting brackets in place and just pull the whole lot out (watch the wiring!)

The rest should be fairly straightforward. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions, and, if you're in the Geelong region, I'll be happy to show you around too.

Whoops! I forgot to mention that for this whole procedure, you don't need to remove the panel under the steering wheel. It all happens at the centre of the car.

What about the 2 screws at the bottom of the radio surround centre console piece...

Since where on the topic of removing the console is a TL center console compatible to fit into a TH or are they completely different

I would highly doubt it.... You would need the climate control stuff from the TL cause I don't think the TH had it... The TL also has different air vent selector (electronic I think) to the TH.

The TL has the air vents integrated whereas the TH has a seperate panel around the vents...

It does look the same shape though.... I bought a TL surround panel from mitsu for $60... (didn't include air controls, just plastic surround)

Firstly, as a new member and 1st time Magna owner, Great forums.

Secondly, Good Guide he3at but I'm having trouble with the removal of the storage compartment under the climate controls. I can open a gap of about 4mm along the top and can see (what I think are) the clips holding it in but can't seem to pull it out. The green dots are where I reckon the clips are and the red arrow where i can reach under to push the compartment from the back. Any particular tricks to getting it moving?

use a flat blade screwdriver, place it where the dots are, and yank it out, dont be scared to use force!

Got it!

I was using what I thought should be enough force and was worried about cracking the panel (the wife would have had my hide) but it turns out I was being a bit of a softie. A little bit more pressure and it slid out no worries.

now... to do a search on removing door panels.
