Hi All
I need a hand deciding on what to get for a H/U for my Car. I got a KL verada with the 6 stacker in built into the headunit. But i want to run subs and cant with teh stock unit, i was looking at some of the pioneer and alpine units that have ipod control and Rear and sub outs, and MP3 player. What are peoples suggestions?

JVC has some new units out that are affordable (around the $350-$400) with USB and ipod control.
Alpine and Eclipse also have some new ones on their lower end with these features. Nearly all of them will have 3 preouts (sub, front, rears) and mp3 compatibility.
JB HIFI would be the best bet for the JVC as they have damn good specials on them most of the time. Don't get them to fit it though.

depends on budget. alpine you can rely on for sound quality. pioneer for functionality. not too sure on JVC. had problems with them in the past but they have really stormed into the market. i have the pioneer deh7850. has all the bells and whistles. is a little hard to navigate in some areas i am finding but overall i am happy with the unit.

You could get an Alpine CDA-9856i headunit... RRP listed at $469 on the Alpine website. Alternatively, you could buy a Pioneer DEH-6850MP - I believe Autobarn have them for around $470 at the moment. Both play back mp3 cds, have the three RCA outs, and support iPods.
I've got the Pioneer 6850 myself. Very happy with it, but I imagine I'd probably be just as happy with that Alpine model. Aren't I helpful :P

budget is around $300-$400 i dont really think i need to spend much more than that?
i have had mainly pioneer headunits before and never had a problem, i have always been happy with them. but seeing i have a ipod now i want to be able to control that through the headunit.

Hey guys,
Just to let you know you can get a Pioneer DEH-6850MP on Ebay for $370.....Might be handy if you know how to install the head unit yourself or take it to a car stereo place and they'll probably put it in for $50.
Thats the Head Unit I'm about to purchase.......looks the goods.

JVC FTW!!!! its top stuff IMO
Features: JVC
Ease of use: Pioneer
SQ: Alpine
doubting that you would really notice the difference in sq between the alpine and the jvc, i would personally recommend JVC to you (despite being an Alpine deck fanboi) :D
im not 100% in jvc models but i think the KD-G825 is the going mdoel for about the $400 mark atm.
just fitted a double din jvc dvd player with in built 6.5" screen and damn, very very awesome unit, controls couldnt be easier, it sounds good (compared to his old Kenwood Echelon) and was damn cheap considering whats in it

i'd say kenwood or JVC... my old kenwood (5 years old now and in a mates car) still kicks as hard as the day i bought it... and the new JVC well... PHWOAR!! love it... it cost me just over a grand though but if your looking for something cheaper definately a brand to go with

Yeah, RRP is $630... I picked up mine for $530 "mates rates". Went to Strathfield on the Sunshine Coast a month later and their everyday price was $479
What about the 5850MP (http://www.pioneer.com.au/products/car_entertainment/CD_Tuners/DEHP5850MP)? It's RRP is $470, so I'm sure you could get it for under $400. It plays mp3 CDs, supports iPods and has the three pre-outs. I think the only differences between that and the 6850MP are that the 6850MP has a mechanicised (is that a word?) flip face, has a fancy multi control knob thingamahig, and has a different colour scheme (blue vs red).

mannix, you were Extremely lucky, as I have known some Kenwood Decks to die of old age at 13 months..
JVC, they have come a long way and still produce the Best Value Head units on the market.
Pioneer offer Sonic Clarity and Alpine are over priced..

just a single Din and i am going to put in a spacer pocket.
Thanks heaps everyone for the advice, i enede uo getting a JVC G725 i think its called.
and i also documented the whole how to remove the console with pictures and i also worked out the wiring for the whole lot aswell, for antenna power, dimmer wire etc, i will post it all up here when i have worked on it, so its a detailed info sheet.
Any suggestions on who i sould talke to about how to put it as a stickey for the removal and the wiring info for a KL/TL (mine is a verada but i would say all the KL/TL would have same wiring)
I also got some POLK 6x9" speakers aswell, going to dump them in the back, cose the KL stock 6x9" are crap, only one way i reckon, Bass only no treble.

to go on a different path you can buy an audio control speaker level crossover, which is a three way crossover, if you only have a speaker out on the hu it allows you to run amplifiers off these aswel as a high pass (for splits) and low pass (for sub) band filter.
JB Hifi sell these if you ask, many people use them in their ford falcons as they can't change the hu's and want to have SQ setup with amping their splits (in active and passive crossover setups) and have a fully controlable sub output aswel, My audio control 6xs is a dedicated crossover and it puts out up to 9volt rms on the rca's so they are top quality! able to drive any amp
