View Full Version : Blocking up the intake resonators

Hey all,

Before the supercharger got installed, I had gatorade bottle lids blocking up my intake resonators which are located after the air box and before the throttle body (the infamous intake resonator mod). When I got the charger fitted I removed them and put the resonators back on because the amount of heat generated and the increase of induction due to the sprintex manifold, the last thing I would want is for the bottle caps to melt or twist and fly into the supercharger... :S

So, is there a stronger plug/lid i can use to block them up with?

i'd think the gatorade lids would be enough as they are a pretty thick bit of plastic, if your're willing to trial just check after trips of different lengths.

How much hotter does the intake feel post supercharger around the area?

I made some aluminium ones on the lathe at work, look pretty cool and are as solid as can be.
Need to find someone local to give u access to a lathe and make some trick polished ones.

Cummins.

It is much more hotter compared to standard, the lids felt a bit weak after i fanged it around a bit

Im glad somebody started a thread like this.

I put my resonators back in on the weekend after about 6 months with the gatorate lids and all I can say is wow! the car drives so much smoother and nicer than when I had them removed because they dont form a 100% seal and therefore unmetered air was getting into the engine and it was running a little lean, resonators back in and cars back to the way is should be.

all you need is a proper seal from the outside.

what you can do is cut the bit of there the clip thing goes that holds the resinators in place and get some kind of tape that can stand heat. and then just wrap bout 2-3 layers on it to stop any leak so it forms a proper seal. that way you dont have to worry bout some lid getting sucked into the charger

you are dodgy you know that? *shakes fist*

nah, sounds like a sweet idea. if i do that i'll put a small section of rubber hose around it so you can't see the tape.

thanks to everyone who replied but so far it looks like i'm going with ashneels dodgy duct tape setup. I will cover the tape up with a larger pipe of some description to hide the dodgyness. lol

Having the piece of mind that nothing could potentially fly into the intake sounds good.

Ductcaps from aviation items (if you know anyone in the trade) specifically avionic componenty is the goer.

Perfect, black plastic and not ghey

Getting a set of Alluminium or steel caps made up (if you can't find something the right size) sounds like the best bet.
A cap which goes over the hole rather than inside the hole (and can be clamped in place) would be good.

I used a set of large McCormick spice lids. They went over the inlet pipes instead of inside them. They are a good fit around the outside (second gen) and I added a set of clips to clamp them in place just to make sure.
Pics in this thread... http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40749&page=2

But if your having increased induction & heat issues - It may be wise to stay away from plastic.
Maybe drop into a couple of Steel/Aluminium manufacturers to see what can be made up.

I like others, use the McKormick method :P I used the small lids (the ones with the flip top) I superglued the flip part to the rest of the lid and removed my resonator, pushed it in the hole which is a perfect fit, and tightened up the pipe clamp, sounds awesome :)

i did this mod just before i ran at heathcote.... but if i had have thought of it at the time i would have done it while i was there to see if there is any measureable difference.... as far as i can tell on the awd it's made no difference at all.... at the strip i removed the radiator splash guard, that mod added 0.1 sec to the 1/4 mile time :S lol

btw i just used a lid off a 2L milk bottle and jammed it in and tightened it up, seems to be holding up well..

40mm welsch plug is the cheapest way without the possibility of it melting. Theyre about $1 each. If you use just one you can still fit the top resonator box (just before the throttle body) back on and it looks standard. Not that it would matter too much with a blower sitting there.

What he said!

They are a perfect fit, and they aalso have a huge lip on the outside so they cant move

its not really gonna do anything either way,

they r just used to store extra air incase u are traveling slower and put ur foot donw etc, blocking them in can cause it to be a lil sluggish when going slow ... but really thats in theory ... in reality id rather vacuum my garden thanworry bout it

and if i had spent 7grand plus on a s/c set up i sure as hell wouldnt be dodgy enough to have lids blocking it up lol

Yeah, I dynoed before and after for the fun of it and it made 0.000kw difference :P I mean there was a couple of tiny variations on the graph but not enough to say whether it went forward or backward.

blocking your resos are bad idea my car idle was worse when i put the reso back on my car kept stalling so i had to disconect my battery and that fixed the problem

You had an air leak, if they are sealed up properly you will BE FINE

ohh is that what that weird black box after the airbox iss???? what does it do.. ive beentrying to figure that out for ages... what does blocking it do?

big noob questions right here...
so im assuming the resonator is the deformed-lookin black box just after the airflowmeter? and u guys hav taken it off and plugged the hols?
and it makes a better sound or something, does it perform better? what are the resonators for? :D

I can't understand why the intake system would heat up more where the resonators are. All the compression takes place between the T/B and the motor doesn't it??

The SC must give off alot of heat

haha, you should see my heat shield lol its starting to melt.

its not that bad when the weather is cool but when it starts hitting over 25-30 degrees its a freakn sauna under there therfore heating everything up

stock intake is a tuned length, engineers found that for throttle response a certain amount of air in the system before the throttle helped improve it... Doesnt really change much but best to do with a cai.

Better explainations out there.

Resonators are designed to modify the standing pressure waves that form in the intake to smooth out the air flow into the engine.

Go to clark rubber and by a 40 mm block of plug for 90 cents heaps better than the gatorade lids

Sounds like a good excuse to whack some bonnet vents on :D.
When I removed my resonators, i didn't feel any difference in power, the intake was a bit louder, had abit of a drone as well. That was about it.

I used Lynx deodorant bottle lids, fits perfect and looks stock (ie black ect hehe).
Haven't noticed anything regarding power and didn't expet too, but when you flatten your foot it sounds like a V8/Boxer, kinda rumbles. :D

the best thing i have found is to use endcaps from 40mm pipe (pvc) like plumbers use.

you know the sort of thing you see on the ends of those pipes that tradie vans and utes have that stores all their pipe and long bits of crap in. well it is that but 40mm. i'll find a spare i have and post a pic

wait out.

here we go, hope that helps.

on the top this one says 32 mm, and yes this is the WRONG one. the one we want is slightly larger at 40mm. on the bottom you can see that it has a screw thread, on the 40mm version it goes onto my intake and is a VERY snug fit. the thread helps to screw it down so you know it isn't going to come off. also comes with a rubber washer for added airtightness.

buy yours today!! ;)
