Hey doods and doodets of amc,
Just 6 weeks or so ago i did an oil change and filter change and yesterday i find out AFTER a trip to Newcastle and back, about 1600 kms all up, that my engine is dry!!!! NO OIL....
I have done some reading and i think that maybe hardened valves is the cause??? Apparently happens overnight?
Can someone help on this please? Its a TF 98 with just over 150,000 kms on the clock.
Oil used was Castrol Cgx i think...

There's no way you could lose 4 litres of oil in 6 weeks without noticing, does your car blow smoke? Leak oil?

I know 4L is a huge amount thats why im worried!!!! :noway:
Should i be scareD?
There was no Oil on the dipstick AT ALL!!!! The oil i put in yesterday made an appearance on the dipstick but only half filled it... i need to get more later.

And you didnt leak on the driveway here in newcastle either, otherwise we would have noticed it. Strange.
So its either burning it or its leaking out whilst your moving.

Have you cross threaded the new oil filter or the sump plug when you re-installed it?
Also check the condition of your sump plug o-ring/gasket.
It sounds like when the oil pressure builds up in your engine, it's squirting out an oriface somewhere.

I checked the sump plug and filter, no signs of leakage... as in no oil hanging around the plug or on the filter around it ect...

this happened to a member from here as well, good o'l Chantra, he went to Rhino's workshop to get his timing belt done and when Rhino check his oil, there wasn't a drop on the dip stick. Chantra usually checks his oil at every tank he fills up but failed to check it on that day when he filled up coz he was in a rush. Anyway he had oil put in...the car had no signs of loosing oil, but it just "disappears", but it hasn't happened since

FYI - No oil on the dipstick doesn't mean no oil in the sump. The difference between the min and max marker on the dipstick is only about 1L.
When you've filled it back up again, take it out and plant your foot.. keep an eye for billowing clouds of smoke in the exhaust lol
My engine, even with the current state of my piston rings, only uses about 1L of oil in 1000km so it would have to be something seriously wrong to use all 4L...

Oh and just to add another thing, the oil warning light never came on either...
BUT, the night i got home from Newcastle i was at a mates and mi car was making the WORST rattle noises, i turned it off coz it sounded worse than bad lifters...
Sump gasket maybe stuffed.
When the car heats up its probably leaking. (its happening atm to Jo's little 4 banger)

When you did your oil change, did you fill it, run it for 30 or so seconds and then refill it to account for the oil filter ? if not theres 3 or 400ml missing which would put a fair dent in your dipstick reading.

the dipstick only shows you 1L of oil there may have been some in the sump still and the oil warning light wouldnt have come on if it was just low and after ur oil change did u check the oil level after starting the car cos the level would drop after the filter has filled up

Just a suggestion, check the water. If there is a hole in the head Gasket, it can allow water to cook off, and transfer oil to the cooling system. If you take the radiator cap off and there is a greyish white gunk on it, there's the problem. And if that is the case, prepare for the car to stop at an inopportune time. If not, yeah rev the crap out of it and look for blue smoke out the exhaust.

Thats what Holden used to do to "fix" the Gen3's oil consumption problems... lol

Check your spark plugs to see if any have oil on them.
Check for oil on the underside of the floor pan.
uno what....similar thing happened to me. One day, when i went to fill up my windscreen wiper fluid, checked radiator, was fine, checked oil......NOTHING THERE! the car was completely cold....left it over night....buuut i know i have a slight head gasket leak...which would explain it.
