View Full Version : VRX Rims on a TH Magna?

Hi people :bowrofl:  !,
I'm thinking of getting VRX series 2 rims on my TH Magna. But have a few questions before I do this. Hope some of you guys can give me some answers.
Would they fit a TH Magna? I think so right?
Cost of these rims without tyres, new and old? Like what price range should I be looking at?
Tyres what kind of tyres would fix these rims on my Magna? I understand the tyre size should be 225/50/17. But would these be the same size tyres as my current wheels? Stock Magna steel rims with hubcaps which I believe are 15" with tyre sizes 205/65 R15? If not is it possible to put it on (legal)? Would it show an incorrect speed on my speedo?
Can I change the sizes of the tyres than the original (225/50/17) that should be fitted with the VRX rims? Was thinking it maybe cheaper to get tyres of a different specified size to fit the rims. I cannot seem to find this size of tyres on-line. Haven't looked at shops yet.
Price of these tyres (I suppose brand new) how much are they from the cheapest price onwards.
Also would they cause a higher fuel consumption? By how much or better still, less fuel consumption compared to my stock 15" steels?
Lastly anything more that I should look out for?
Would really appreciate help on these matters  . Thanx alot guys! CHEERS!

Gday
firstly, yes the 17" VRX rims will fit on your car.. All magnas from the 2nd gen (1991) to current use the same stud pattern and wheel diameter. So its all good :)
the cost of the rims.. brand new from mitsubishi, i think they sell them for $450 each rim!?? something ridiculous like that, ive been told. Usually people sell them on here second hand for about $1000ish, with decent tyres on them.
As for the type of tyres, 225/50 is what comes stock, but you can also use 235/45.. its more common and usually cheaper..
Using those dimension tyres, your speedo will not be out.
As for it being legal, depends on your state.. most states allow you to go 2" bigger rim size.. but i dont know, everyone says different things on the forums  so check up on that
price of 17" tyres have gone down alot, u should be able to pick up a decent set for between $110 - $150 each tyre. depending on brand and quality of course.
"technicallyL, because you are increasing the amount of tyre making contact to the road, there should be more friction.. and more fuel used.. bla bla.. but i dont think you will notice any difference at all. it is very a minor upgrade, so i wouldnt worry about that.
just make sure you check the rims out, no major scratches or dents.
these wheels are Hot, i had them on my wagon for a short period of time and look awesome on any magna. So if you see a set for sale, jump on it!

Gerard... Another AMC member took me to task when I posted that I had done the same thing. He said 235's are too wide for the 17" x 7" wide VRX rim.
Anyone want to comment?

235/45s on a 17x7 inch rim are illegal according to the tyre fitting guide - although they will fit on the rim, and the police wouldnt be interested, your insurance company assessor might be after you lock up and slam into the back of that brand new Mercedes.
The maximum legal width on the 17x7 wheel is 225.

Hey guys!,
Well I'm confused now. Err so I guess I can only use the original tyre size (225/50/17)?
There wouldn't be any other tyre size I can use to fit on the VRX rims to fit on the Magna? I was just thinking along the lines of cost savings?
Would anyone know the price of the original tyres? I guess at this size there wouldn't be cheap ones available? Like those Bob Jane or Maxis brands? Well basically cheaper brands? Again save cost.
Thanx for your input so far guys. CHEERS!!!

You can put 235/45/17 on them if you wish but as dave au said, they are illegal with the potential for problems with your insurance provider if you are involved in an accident.
However, they are also generally cheaper than the 225/50/17.
I have 235/45/17 Clear's (made by Pirelli) on my vrx rims last May which I paid $129 per tire for from Jax. I don't expect you would have any rego issues as my mine passed ok last month.
Edit: The Clear tires I bought had a load rating of 97 which exceeds the 94 rating required.

Basically the original tyre was Bridgestone Grid II in the size of 225/50R17 94W.
Maxis do not manufacture a tyre with the required load rating.
I got a price on the weekend for the Bridgestone Grid II of $240 a tyre fitted.
I am about to place an order for 4 rims and tyres, I am not going to have much change from $1800.

Thanx for your input so far guys. CHEERS!!!Yeah you'd probably be better getting an aftermarket rim that is 17x7.5 - this will fit the 225/45 legally. Obviously the downside is you'd want to try and get a rim with a similiar offset if possible to what the Magnas had.
As said before, you can get the 17x7s, keep it legal and have 225/50R17s, which will also make a minimal impact on ur speedo, but the downside is there are very few cheap tyres in this price range. I went with a mid range Falken tyre that from memory was about $215 each.
For the Bridgestone Potenza g3s, which have replaced the OEM grid II tyre, you'll find their price will range from $225 to $280.
Personally I'm a bridgestone man but some say that the Goodyear Eagle F1s are the best tyre going in the 225/50R17 size and their about $255 each upwards.
Cheap tyres are not always a good option - having a good tyre with a good tread level is probably one of the most important and easy to obtain performance options around - and especially for safety as well.
One of my friends nearly killed me due to having cheap ass Firestone tyres in an aquaplane spin at 110km/h - not a good feeling, thats why I think it's pretty critical to have good tread.

you can some awesome 17's for $1800 even 18's
and also those bob jane tyres and stuff all have common tyre sizes maybe u should look down that path
But i do agree that the VRX S2 rims are killa

Is this the case in all states? When I was phoning around, most tyre places were reccomending 235/45 because they were cheaper and more available.
Where can I get more info?

It applies to all states. Ask them to check their tyre fitting guide. Most of the fitters think that 235/45 will fit as well, until you insist they check their manual.

Also keep this in mind, if you have a misses that loves to get as close to a fckin gutter as she can, it wont hurt to throw on an extra width tyre.. This allows the wall of the tyre to buldge over the rim there rubbing the tyre on the gutter rather then the rim... also doesnt look to shabby either..im running 18's x 8 unfortunately I cant help with the Vrx's wheels.
Hope ya getted it sorted out :D...

Yeah you'd probably be better getting an aftermarket rim that is 17x7.5 - this will fit the 225/45 legally.
But may not be legal as per your transport authority's guidelines nor satisfy your insurers limits.
Basically the original tyre was Bridgestone Grid II in the size of 225/50R17 94W.
And as a result, on a TH you will struggle to find the right tyre. I've got a mix of three different Falken and Hankook tyres on my car (long story). Hankook meet the 95 load rating but the Falken's do not.

But you could have had you been at fault and the insurance company wished to default the claim.
See what they do when over $100,000 is claimed.

Thanx for that pic Billy!, Thats what I want my car to look like but these rims seem expensive compared to after market ones. I mean original rims are supposed to be on the cheaper side right? What tyres do you have on them? Errr wait those are the original rims that came with the car right? How much do the tyres cost on those rims and what size are they? The original size they are supposed to be on? Would you know if they would fit my TH Magna exactly? Lastly I have a question that I'll probably PM you on. Cheers!

Hi guys!
Just to sort of get things right here, if I use the specified tyre size (225/50/17) with the VRX rims, they should have the all dimensions (width & height) (Radius from the centre of the rims to the edge of the rubber of the tyre times 2) as the ones I currently have right? My stock steels (205/65 R15)?
Cheers!!!!

Nice though the series II rims are, I don't think they suit the GenII. There is something not quite right about it...

Hey Redav!,
Sorry but you sort of lost me with what you said. If I were to use the recommended tyre size (225/50 R17) on the VRX rims it should have the same dimensions as my stock steels (205/65 R15) right?
Could you explain 'I would struggle to find the right tyre'?

Pretty sure he is refering to the load rating of tyres for a TH being higher than that required for a TJ - I think its 95 for the TH vs 94 for the TJ

i had S2 TJ VRX rims on my TH for a while, they fit no worries. at the time i had a real strict insurance policy, and they would only insure 17x7s on a TH that came with stock 15s. so definately stick with the 225/50/17 tyres (cant be bothered reading the whole thread, but its in the guideline book)

Man can't believe how expensive people sell these rims. If you ask me its ridiculous! Not to mention how hard they are to find. If anyone can help in locating these rims preferably in QLD, Brisbane do let me know. Hate people marking up the price for something thats standard issue.

When you compare a set of 4 'Rodney Jane' 17's from Bob Jane which are currently $516 and that set of 4 immaculate VRX rims made by ROH that went for $600 on ebay the other day, there isn't really much price disparity. In addition, the VRX rims looks much better and are in more demand which is going to affect the price.
