yeah i know exhausts have ben covered a million times, but....

im gettin the kit fitted soon (sprintex) and i was wanting opinions on exhaust systems to suit... awd s/c'd

i was thinking

povo option
extractors, high flow cat and my straight through muffler put back on it, stock tail pipe which is bigger than 2"1/4 but smaller than 2"1/2...

or extractors high flow cat straight through 2"1/2 system

or same as above and 3"

For best results - I think you would need the whole think in 3" pipe.

/me thinks you should go 3" all the way

RPW/hurricane AWD extractors to 3" cat and the rest. I remember RPW saying that they actually had bigger primaries for a supercharged version but I wouldn't think they would fit AWD.

the issue i have with the 3" system is... isnt it going to be very loud? compared to a 2.5" system...

maybe overkill too? i've had a 200kw much larger engine and it was running only a 2"1/4...

you'll want as little restriction as possible on a forced induction motor. so 3" would be the go.

It will be loud, yes. A hell of a lot louder than a similar turbo car with the same exhaust. If you live in a residential area - I'd be trying to squeeze at least 3 mufflers into the system. Don't know how you'll manage that with an AWD though.

not necessarily but as the magna induction note can get fairly loud, plus the supercharger will be loud... just get 2 mufflers, you can also alter it, as in if you were getting a 3 " system fitted im sure the exhaust shop might just let you change it until it's right for you....

I got 2.5" all the way through with pacemakers, high flow cat and no resonator and still i don't think its enough, feels like something is restricting it.. that and the fact it still sounds like a week wacker under load lol

3" definatly if you can

Yeh go the 3" all round mate, you will be a lot better off than if you were to go 2.5" and the price doesnt vary to much!!

Why would you bother with either of these two of the stock system is almost 2.5' anyway? Waste of money. There's a coupla points it narrows down so you could just fix them, high flow cat and muffler.

well there is no room under the awd to put mufflers etc... only at the rear....

so new idea

extractors to highflow cat single 3" system with hotdog/s or something till just past the diff.. then split into 2... 2"1/2 pipes with muffler on eitherside... either straight through or baffled kind not sure atm... got quoted approx $1600 inc extractors...

That's a pretty good price, and a supercharged AWD with duelies just rolls off the tounge :).
3" Will be good if you plan on upgrading the s/c in the future to push more air through.

that sounds like a good setup. probably better than just a single 3"

Good price aswell, what extractors?

whats the point in getting 3 inch pipe and having to get resinators and 2 mufflers just to shut it up? wont that cause more restriction than a free flowing 2½ system with no resinators and only 1 stainless cannon out the back?

im ignorant when it comes to s/c exhausts but i thought modding an s/c'd engine was much the same as modding an NA so 2.5 would be good?

im just curious is all

I think it's to do with the forced induction. Obviously there's more airflow so the air needs a bigger hole to escape from.

On topic tho, a 3" exhaust on an auto will drone deafeningly won't it?

Get a vortex muffler! They actually create a suction in the exhaust and are supposedly the best you can get at the moment. They're aussie too!

They come in different inlet sizes, different lengths, and in aneel steel or stainless steel. They come in standard or racing (the racing one only really benefits high powered V8's) I got the cheaper one because it performs the same and has a 5 yr warrantly on it! I don't need a highly polished muffler on a TP thats going to last 10 times longer than the car itself!

The engine feels a lot better with this alone, just make sure there are no bend in the pipe either end at least 10 cm from the muffler.

I previously had a different sports muffler on it (I'll try and find what type) and that sucked. It sounded ok, but I am a sucker to try new gadjets and couldn't believe the difference! Its classified as a fuel saver muffler, and was tested on Today tonight (they said it was ok, but they put it on an 87 falcon so yeah, depends on the car!)

I got mine off Ebay really cheaply, there is another seller on there selling them for $130 (and no I don't know the guy) if you're interested. its definately worth it, and with a supercharger I think it would work even better!

The principle of it, you don't need any backpressure as the same effect is applied through the suction caused by the vortex, so its better than any other muffler or straight through. Definately works well for top end! :D

Have a chat to sprintex about what sort of muffler to use - they are very helpful, and happy enough to answer questions - they did design the setup.

They suggest a highflow catalytic converter, but said a twin pipe exhaust is a little too loud to live with full time...

I reckon that the kits could do with water injection to reduce the heat soak in the engine bay, would probably reduce the intake temps enough that you use a bit less fuel.

thanks all...

yeah i have talked to sprintex.. and found out a bit more about their car....

did you know it dosent have extractors. Just high flow cat and stock tail pipe, split into a twin at the rear, "mainly to look good for the auto show"

any way im getting my system fitted on wednesday all im saying is it's costing $1600 all up, far out im poor as now lol

will post details of it later on..

25 inch long, 3 inch diameter one! lol. I'd love to see how it would work with extractors and a blower!

Basic website I know but it works, at least for me. Today Tonight tested it too, not that that says much!

got my exhaust done today!!

it's

HM stainless extractors into a 3" highflow metalised cat and 3" system 2 resies till the rear axle, then splits into a twin 2.5" system all mandrel bent, and some kinda rear mufflers... lol not straight through, some kinda glass pack ones....

all up cost $1600, fitted inc extractors...sounds umm way different to my old system... and tested for DB and makes 84db but when on throttle is loud as!! my old system was 91db

pretty awesome and has more ground clearance than the stocky exhaust...

no pics cos its all black and car is to low and cant see anything, lol

HM extractors are only FACTORY ralliart art extractors,

with all the money spending on the s/c thought u might have gone for something like pacies or RPW gear

I am so going to Sydney/Melbourne for exhaust upgrades in the future. I paid the same for my dual setup and it's press bent, and didn't include a cat.

grrr.

no tips, had it fitted so it couldnt really be seen, but you can just see it, i'll get a pic...

going to put on some 4" dump tips like my old one next week, welded to the muffler body, dont like looking at the exhaust....

looks pretty cool when the condensation is coming out from both sides

15-11-2006, 04:10 PM
umm, id say no i cant tell, only driven about 5ks on it so far... didnt even think of that.... although i did manage wheelspin in the wet around a corner lol but it did that b4.... sounds live it revs harder now SOUNDS (without actually reving it hard) proably due to the exhaust being in stereo LOL

when i get the kit, then further down the track with water inj and boost pulley and new ecu... well see how it goes..

Nice work. Not a fan of those dumpies but it's your car, not mine.

How bad's the drone? I imagine it's pretty horrendous with a 3" pipe split into 2x2.5" and being auto.

andrewd
16-11-2006, 07:16 PM
under load its pretty droney and very loud, but funny though its no worse than stock system with the muffler i had on it, except it sounds totally different now, very deep sound down low, still drones way to much.. but at crusing speeds and when lightly on the throttle its fine.... driving on the freeway today and it was quieter than previous system untill i floored it lol

Yeah... might need to look into another res or two to drown out the drone.
