View Full Version : Rear sway bar - woot!

there was much swearing and cursing last night at about 9:30.

after about 2 hours of crawling around under my car, I was tightening up the last bolt on my rear sway bar, when bang! it snaps... of course, no stores that stock high tensile bolts are open at 9:30 on Friday night, so I had to wait until this morning to run and get some.

5 minutes under the car and the rear sway bar is on! :D

all I can say is WOW!

no more leaning into corners, the car goes where I tell it to, with almost no body roll (and it's only on the medium setting!). I took a corner this morning at about 10kmh over the speed that I usually start to understeer on, and nothing. it just gripped and pulled through.

by far the best handling/suspension mod I've done.

I'll post some pics when I get the chance.

cheers,

In my humble opinion a rear sway bar is the first mod that should be done and around $200 great value

Keep in mind you won't be able to do set it on hard, as you'll run into clearance issues. You'll need to shop the end bit where the "soft" hole is, or it fouls the arm.

Or is my car just wierd?

it didn't look like I was going to have any probs with any of the settings.

the only clearance issue I had was the left rear chassis mount versus the left exhaust pipe. had to tug down on the exhaust pipe to do up the u-bolt.

I've got the BMR69XZ Rear Swaybar-X h/duty Blade adjustable on my TJII Exec.
Softest setting is magic for balance and getting rid of understeer.
I have stock springs and shocks and the bar was hitting the toe control arm when I had anyone in the back when first installed. I sent an e-mail to Whiteline and someone rang me two days later and sent out some longer links between the bar and the suspension (free). Works perfectly now and I have kept the shorter links in case I ever lower the suspension. ( Whiteline didn't want them back).
I totally agree that this is the most significant initial mod someone should do.
Full marks to Whiteline for their support.

it's seriously not a hassle at all... a 17mm socket is all you need to remove the chassis bolts and lower control arm bolt (to attach the mounting brackets) and then I think it was a 14mm socket to do up the linkage bolts and a 12mm to do up the u-bolt nuts.

with the right tools, I think I could do it again in about 45 minutes.

I didn't have the right tools and it took me 2 hours (with about 45 minutes chasing down the right tools).

I can take some pics and put them up if you like.

Yes please post some pics. I'm thinking of getting a rear sway bar for my KJ Verada.

No clearance issue for me with the bar set to the stiffest setting. Had it like that for about 6 months with no ill effects.

hey BB, are you using factory drop-links, or stock ones?

I suspect I need to get some longer aftermarket drop-link sm atm I'm using the stock ones that came with the factory TJ Sports swaybar.

Also my swaybar isn't centred properly, one drop link is at an angle while the other is straight. So I think I need to get a longer/tougher aftermarket drop-link to give me more clearance, and get my swaybar centred properly.

i've use the factory links and have no issues with the bar moving to one side.
