View Full Version : Very worrying engine noise(s) :-(

I'm very worried about a new whining noise in my TF V6 engine bay. It started after a huge rainfall in town and I had to cross a small water crossing, probably 25cm deep.. car runs great as normal, same power, smoothness and response.. but just has a new horrible whining noise which to me sounds to be an internal noise.. it increases its tone with engine revs, higher its revved the higher pitch the whine and sounds like its coming from the rear of the engine around the throttle body area. I've thoroughly cleaned the throttle body out with cleaner, but to no fix.. same noise. It kinda has the "vn commodore v6 engine cold" whine if that helps. Would anybody have the faintest idea what it could be?

This noise is combined with a new dry belt noise.. which i will buy some belt grip spray tomorrow. What's weird about these problems is that when the air con is going, the noises are reduced somewhat, but I can't work out whether both the whining and the belt noises are reduced together with the air con going.. but worrying nonetheless.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks every1.

On the subject ..... I have what sounds like a rattle in second gear when the car is under load accelerating. Not a very loud one, but it's noticable.

Thoughts?

Sounds like it could be a gearbox problem.. worn shafts or gears.. i'd drain and refill the gearbox and check for any metal shavings in the oil and condition of the oil etc.

Sounds like water got onto a belt after the puddle incident.

I am due for a transmission flush .... I will take care of that and then see what is happening.

whistling is likely a gasket vibrating, torque all bolts in the area of the noise : ) good luck.

does it sound metallic? if so, its just an engine pipe, will cost you about $500-$600 at a Mitsu dealer to have it replaced

I got it checked out today.. it's actually a stuffed bearing in either the belt tensioner pulley or air con compressor.. hopefully the belt tensioner as its a cheaper fix. Either way it was a worry so im relieved that it's nothing too bad.
