View Full Version : Sway bars
Ok - i've decided to get one - where would I go to buy one?
Also what's the difference between a sway and a strut bar?
I've read up some articles and want a NON-hollow one - so where in Sydney can I go and purchase one?
Thanx.

sway bars go under the bottom of the suspension dampers and the Strut bars go on top the of the struts
I am assuming you are getting a white line one?? you can get whiteline goods from any repco/autopro/marlows store (from memory)

Magnas already have a fairly decent front sway bar - but they don't have a rear one - unless it is like a VR-X or Ralliart or something - but then you will need a front strut bar as well!!
Prices - i dunno sorry mate - and no I don't have a Rear sway bar yet - on the to do list.

Erm.. I don't think Magnas have front sway bar, FWD don't need them and yes the VRX, Sports and Ralliart have rear sway bars

I know mine ('97) doesn't have one. Would probably a good upgrade.
went to repco as i said - when i asked if they sold 'em
the man over the counter said - 'what's a strut bar?' - i was like 'f*ck' - here we go - anyway, after i explained it to him, he said - nope, they dont sell 'em, and better to go to a performance shop.
not happy :(
i want it now! :D

Actually I think the entire TL range now has a rear sway bar as stock.
The back axle area under the car looks a lot different compared to my TJ.
There was an extra pole going from both wheel arches - positioned to the rear. I assume this was a rear sway bar?

Sorry to burst you bubble, but you have about as much chance of getting a strut brace from supercheap as you would pigs flying.
Sorry and all.
I used to work there and they have nothing, and alot of there perfoemance gear is RICE in its finest form.
so can someone tell me where i can get an ADJUSTABLE strut bar for my TJ tomorrow? hopefully under 200 mark... in Sydney :D
Maybe if you try ordering online from Whiteline ? ---- http://www.whiteline.com.au/store/ --- part number KSB592 ..... the price for a strut bar is ridiculous anyway - 180 AUD ... it's just a piece of metal (or a magic wand?) :)
Have any of you fixed a REAR strut bar?
check this excerpt from an RPW article: http://www.rpw.com.au/Performance%20Upgrades/Mitsubishi/Magna/Magna%20TE%20-%20TJ/magna101suspension.htm :
".....Fitment of front strut brace - to help in torque steer where the vehicle is producing much more power than standard. A waste of time if the vehicle is standard........"
what do you all think?
define 'much more' - as i'm going to be doing some work on the car, just getting it all ready for the bigger mods :D
and thanx for the links :)
I've just copied & pasted that ..... it's the RPW people's opinion ...... "much more" maybe means fitting more of their products before the strut bar  (marketing)
hmmm - GRAND TOTAL: AU$212.20
thats including delivery :(
i was expecting to pay about the 170 mark for it - anyone know anyplaces that stock them? or other 'GOOD' strut bars for our Magnas? In Sydney - or elsewhere, as long as it comes out cheaper when delivering.

Mate get a rear sway bar ($180) probably the single cheapest most noticeable mod you can do. I used Whiteline and it's brilliant (noticeable from the first corner) if there strut braces are half as good they'll be great too.
I bought my stuff thru Fulcrum suspension in Brissy, Do you have them down there.
One other thing just about every car built has a front sway bar wether it be FWD or RWD and Magnas definately do.
On a light note.
You know of all the nutsholding things in the car the scariest one is holding the steering wheel

I do know what they are, just wasnt which was which for the front and the back. As in many (I've read up some articles and want a NON-hollow one" - from original post, usually helps to read it) articles that i've read, i've noticed that they interchange the names a lot, that's why I asked.
Thank you for the replies of people with something useful to say.

my 97 TE has a front sway bar, very factory looking.
No rear one tho. Has anyone ever had their arse end slide out on a corner in the wet without handbrake and speed?? i'm thinkin some healthy suspension mods would cure this. Also, from your own expieriences, who make the most suitable set of lowered springs for the TE. Any help is greatly appreciated.

well to give you more explanation
and a hollow strut tower brace or sway bar doesn't do anything special it might also be carbon/aluminum, full anything
a strut tower brace is just a piece of metal that bolts on your suspension (front or back) to make your chassis stiffer! good for cornering but if it's too stiff you will get understeer
now for sway bar it's a piece of metal rod that attaches itself on both sides of your car right under your lower control arm, the purpose is to stiffen underneath the chassis, the two pieces acts like arms, if you try to pull on one side, the other side is gonna move, but this acts a bit different as it prevents that pulling action, that's why you go thicker and stiffer
sway bars also cause understeer if it's too stiff
on drift machines they have ultra thick swar bays so it's easier to go sideways, but you dont want that
did i make sense? a bit hard to explain
to prevent your car from going sideways (you can'treally prevent it) but all you need is really goo suspension and tires
suitable springs would be Kings/lovells but it's not only springs, there is also the use of shockers, go for Koni red or KYB or even Monroe dont go pedders coz some of them are just rebadged monroe!!!!
hope i was helpful!!!
cheers

I have the strut brace and rear sway bar on the TT magna and I have to say I would not have a magna without them now.
Firstly with regard to pricing, RPW has them in stock all the time both kits and I could defintly sell to anyone in australia a complete strut brace for around $215.00 delivered to there door.
Rear sway bar I would need to check pricing on.
The strut brace does make a large difference (Need to update my website on this) as it stops the magna's from wandering on the road with the different cambers as well as does stop a lot of torque steer.
The cars do have a front sway bar standard which does not need to be chandged.
The rear sway bar wher enot fitted is definitly worth it as well.
We stock the Whiteline range all the time and will definitly match any official price from anyone without a doubt.
