For all the fans out there of 17x7's
i spoke to NRMA insurance the other day, and asked them about fitting 235's to my 17x7 vrx rims...
they said and i qoute "we don't care as long as they are RTA approved"
they said " we used to care... but now we don't"

so i said.."so if i go to the RTA and they provide me with the OK then i need to notify you and i will still be covered?"

and they said.. " yup"

so im like Sweeet.. now all i gotta do is convince the RTA....:nuts: joy :(

yeh you wont be able to convince the RTA though as they're not legal....

so even though its good to hear NRMA isnt being as picky as they used to be it doesnt help you much as the RTA aint going to OK 235s on a 7" rim

NRMA = nsw branch of RACV/RACQ, and yes they have become less tight, which is good cuz i'm with them as well.
As gremlin said, you won't convince the RTA because it's not recommended to fit that tyre to the rim (in fact most 235 tyres come with a warning written on them.

I wonder if that means theyve taken off their "no wheels over 7" wide on a TH Magna" policy (yes, they wouldnt allow this previously).. Might have to give them a call and add my wheels to the insurance policy..

Im sure I can convince them that 7.5" wide wheels havent changed the track of the car by a larger than legal amount.

I've got 235's on 7.5 inch wide rim. I probably wouldnt want a narrower rim with these size tyres anyway. It looks way nicer when the sidewall of the tire is flat and not bubbling out anyways.

235/45/17 is illegal in sa on a 7" rim so i expect it would be the same everywhere. 7.5" minimum for a 235. i did try myself at one time but nobody would fit them because of the legality.

your kidding? i just took my rims in, said i wanted tyres on them, and they got put on......

Where did you get them done? If you're in an accident, and the insurance company can find ANY reason that your tyres were at fault, you wont be covered.

Looks like a good reason. :confused: Seems appearance drives choice of rims and tyres these days... 17" rims used to be the beez kneez... appropriate balance of ride comfort and handling .. 50 profile was good enough.

Now everyone wants wagon wheels with rubber bands as tyres. 20s or 22s with 25 or 30 profile are a fashion statement IMHO, not a good choice for driving comfort and handling. You need to get quite technical and spend much $$$ to actual benefit from super sized rim heights. No use having 20s and having the springs and dampers so tight that you rattle your teeth out, damage anything not tied down and do stuff all about proper car handling. :)

Bang on.

I was a tad worried when mine got hit recently, mind you it was prety obvious what happened so there was nil or very little checking out on my car by insurance peeps.

235/45 is quite ok on a 7" rim, I've hit thumping big rocks and gashed the hell out of a tyre and it has stayed put all the way home quite happily, if somewhat ... flat lol

I think 225/55 is what is indended for 17x7, at least that's what the factory default tyres for the VRX rims that I have is I *think*. When it comes time for new tyres, I'll be getting a proper profile as specified by ATRA handbook.

Any tyre shop without a copy of the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia Standards Manual should be well avoided, especially if they've got a copy and blatantly ignore the guidelines.
