I've used an analogue multimeter connected to the terminals near the drivers right foot. You can get the codes that way. A digital meter is too slow in responding. A very low wattage globe also works but there is a risk that it will draw too much current and damage the ecu

The workshop manual gives the procedure.

It's achievable and it's easy

If you want all the info available from the 2nd gen ecu then MMCdlogger works well at low cost.
Software free, roll your own interface (or buy), suitable PDA and you're in business.
I've built one and it works fine on a TR

An LED is a Light Emitting Diode.

Heres how you can build a test lamp using one.

26272 The resister is 560 ohms and is available from Dick Smith for about 10c, the LED is less than a buck and I used a pop rivet slightly squeezed to pinch the wire between the rivet and the pen casing.

Heres mine so you know what it'll look like.

26273 The LED is in the top and the earth wire comes out a hole I made in the side.

and heres where you can download the manual

http://www.thehammer.net/magna/

That should give you all the info you'll need:D
