Well gentlemen, I've installed my pod filter today. It has its own heat shroud to protect against the heat of my engine bay and I removed the seemingly restrictive U bend snorkel which looked like crap. Stock piping still and resonators removed on the elbow near the MAF. Due to it having a shroud, it's pretty much directional so I don't think a hood scoop is going to help me, but it would be nice to bring some cool air into the engine bay to decrease some of the heat.

Performance wise, I havent noticed any difference, car doesn't feel lighter, but jesus buddy christ does it sound great on WOT, a very very sweet sound, sounds like I've got a big V8 under the hood. Pure wank factor in the end I guess, now all i need to do is chrome up the piping... big metal 90mm pipes with black silicone joins, what do you think?

Apologies for the resolution, 800x600 works fine on my 20" widescreen :P

Just do what I did to my old KS (Skotty's car). I had holes cut into the bumper and then
glued storm water pipe (75deg bend) behind it and then attached those flexi hoses from
from the storm water pipe to the filter. There is a rectangular plastic cap that is between
the battery and the fender. Remove it and slightly increase the hole size so that you can
feed the flexi hose through it. Purhaps Skotty could take some pics of it.

He told me it was around the $150 Mark, that was with K&N Round filter, Adaptor, and Shroud.

Very easy to install mate...take off the old intake...put on the new...few bolts and alan keys needed nothing major

Tuff is right, the whole setup cost me $150. Piece of cake to install, took like 30 minutes or so, most of which was finding where the bolts were :P

Where can I get one for my TL if it is only $150 inc the shroud I'm in....

I may even attach a CAI to the front. . mr plod should't have a problem if it is entirely covered

Pod cover is generic, hence no branding on it (thank god, I hate branding, makes everything seem so rice) I got mine at Top Gear Auto here in Townsville, so my advice is to just shop around.

speaking of Generic....
Is there much difference between a K&N pod and other brands???

What would be a good alternative?
are the ones you see ebay that bad?

ok so heres what i have found on Pod filters,

1) they work! they sound mean, which may be just wank factor buti in my personal experience have found that if you dont put your foot to the floor they save you petrol, to the tune of i rekon about 5x the distance...

2) now theres alot of talk about the diff tween oval and round pods... some people say that round filters dont work, this is because the inverted cone at teh top of the round pod filters causes the air to "tumble" and thus messes with the air sensor, but if like me you have a flat topped filter, of a decent size, so that you get trueley un-restricted flow.

3)i believe that one of the benfits of having the oval filter is that it directly bolts to your Air sensor, but having said this, there is not alot of difference in the 3" opening to the honeycomb of the sensor, so really a adapted 3"wont change much from a oval.

4) a cold-airbox, apart from keeping you guys in aussie defected, also means that you can bring cold, fresh air into your engine, cold air is denser, and gives you more oxygen in the mix that makes for a more complete combustion ofthe fuel, meaning that you get better power and better economy for using all that precious juice that you put in...

5)thogh again having siad that, when you put your foot down, it gna react faster, by putting more petrol in the mix, and you end up using more... so its all so-so

there are real gains to be had by having a properly done pod and box, witha cold air inlet, but then again you could just grab a panel, but wheres the brain-aching, pocket emptying, mindless noise-creating fun in that?!!!

feel free to correct points or add them, but this is my opinion, and taken from various sources, so dont bollock me, rather add to the conversation in a positive way :D

peace

It also means keeping the hot air from your engine OUT, even if the air is at 30 degrees ambient, it's much cooler than say, the air whipping off your exhaust manifolds or from the rest of the block..

Plus with a boxed-pod, you can run 3" piping to anywhere and still get the same effect, you don't HAVE to run it to your bumper etc.. which would be a bit painful if you take the magna river-crossing.. oh and boxing the pod looses the sound :(
