I have a VRX with 5spd tippy. It seems to take a long time to engage into drive, when I move the selector from P to D.. or from N to D. And from P to R.

I would say it takes a full two secs, maybe three, to engage into drive. It seems long. Or are Mitsubishi transmissions, tiptronics.. just slow?

Fluid is fine. It's had all recommended servicing.. .now moving onto 95,000km. First registered Sept 2002.

My 15 y.o Camry auto goes into drive a lot quicker.. say, in half a second.

Ideas?

Does it do it just when cold? Or all the time?
Mine has abit of a delay, maybe about a second at most though.

More noticeable when cold.. like first thing in morning leaving for work.

A bit better when warm.

my 4 speed tippy is pretty fast... maybe half a second at most and it's done 67k. I have more delay in the brand new Jetta 'box.

might be worth while getting it checked out. has it ever been quick to engage?

cheers,
.wook

hmmm i know mines abit slower when it's cold, but i wouldn't say 3 seconds. There might be a mechanism in the gearbox that makes it shifter slower when cold to help prevent damage? Maybe yours is worn out? Something to think about at least, i'm not 100% how the tippy transmission works.

Ive got a friend with a TJ1 Sports 5spd tippy and it takes 2-3 seconds aswell.

My 4spd Auto changes instantly.

When my gf is in my car the 5 speed trippy changes instant (you can see the car still rolling back, puts it in D and she drives straight off), wit me it takes 1-2 secs.

Yep, wez and I are trying to figure out how the f**k she does it.
Wez has a 5 speed TJ sports and it takes 2-3 seconds from R to D to kick in.

there is a thread somewhere on amc about this, the delay can be programmed in to the gearbox....

there are the instructions there

my 5spd tippy goes from d-r-d- whatever almost straight away as normal, not 1-2 sec lol

Update... I timed it this morning. More like 1 to 1.5 secs.

Interestingly... as I put the car in reverse, from Park, its almost instantaneous. From cold, to reverse the car out the drive way.

Then, as I stop after reversing on to street, and slide it to Drive, it then takes about 1 to 1.5 secs.

might ask the Mitsu dealer next time I get a service. Which will be in a month or two.

Cheers for the advice. :D

the delay can not be 'programmed' into the box. It can be improved though as anything more than two seconds is excessive. here is the learning program once again. it is the same for the 5 spd tippys.

I'm probably wrong here.......but mine has a slight delay as well.........

to me it sounds like it a protection thing. The computer needs to think before engaging to drive to make sure all is good before engaging.....especially from reverse to drive.

This is probably dribble......but who knows???

Yeh that's what i always thought as well, which is why i live with my 1 second delay, really it's not that big of a deal to me, and i'd rather wait 1 second (think, 1 second, it's SFA time) to protect my gearbox :).

The only time I wish mine switched from D to R and back to D a little quicker is when doing 3 point turns.

This procedure works a treat! Got mine back from the dealer and the delays were greater than they were, and it was annoying me. Have reprogrammed it back to normal now!
