It's part of the emission control, the ess relay should open at revs above 1600 or something. My book mentions "behind passenger side kick panel", but I have no idea what that is and neither what to look for :)

arhh i see now. to find the kick panel is easy. it's old skool wording.
sit in ur passenger seat and take ur left leg and move it to the left. there wil be a plastic cover panel there(kick panel). here's a pic of my dash out when i had a leak so ignore the blue lines. if u look above the arow there's the fuel pressure regulator and what u need i think. hope it helps anyway.

oic, well, I would never have looked at that place :). In your pic the cover is still there, so I may have to look for something behind that cover.

Thanks smooth!

if u look above that u will see the relays and computer. there isn't anything behind that bit of plastic. u have to look up under the dash above the kick panel.

yeah, i think carbies only had stuff there... that green relay is actually my fan-run on system (my car is leaded). otherwise, the ess relay was there, and just a bit under the dash is the fuel pump relay. (kinda where it sits for an EFI, but it looks different than the EFI one)

leaded models didn't have a fuel pump relay as they had a mechanical fuel pump in the head.

is the stop lamp fail relay also behind the glove box, or is that somewhere else?

stop lamp fail is under the dash on the drivers side. you'll see a bunch of relays up there. the stop lamp fail one is the bigger one.
