View Full Version : Amp protection mode, part two!

Ok, I ended up working out why my amps were turning off, so it seems the RCA connections I rigged up to the ends of my rear L&R speakers were causing the amp to go into protection mode. I unplugged them and have been living off my subwoofers and front 4 inchers. This is a pain in the ass though, so I decided to rig up better RCA connections using plugs bought from Jaycar. Plugs bought, I began installing. Let me just say that these plugs are an absolute **** to deal with, solder wont grip to them and the sheathing is a screw type, dislodging any hard work you've done with them. I managed to get them hooked up, and connected to amp. So I get in my car and go for a drive, all is right for 30sec - 1minute, however the amp goes into protection mode, again. Sigh.
Can anyone tell me whether it is actually possible to hook the rear speaker lines up to an amp without trouble? Or is that bad juu-juu... :( This is giving me the ****s, plus i think i've screwed the rear speakers somehow... should have just gone with 4 channel 6 inchers.
Any advice?

sounds like theres something thats sending the amp into protection mode
have you got a mate with a 4ch amp
maybe try another 4ch amp to see if theres something wrong with your amp
you can also try swapping the RCA's on the amp if you think thats your problem
when i mean swap them just change them on the amp not the cable
swap the fronts with the rears to see if its a connection problem

There is nothing wrong with the amp, I've even had it swapped over for another of the same model.
My question is that am I screwing things up by running regular speaker outs with RCA points put on the end of them to an amp? I may as well just go back to un-amped rears and have a half redundant 4chan amp, grr.

so you are running the say 50wrms out of the headunit into the rca input of the amp. if this is so no wonder you are having problems. you need a high to low inverter

I went to Strathfield before I read this, and he told me the same thing, hooray for me not knowing much about car audio :( All will be well, I'm picking the gear I need up on wednesday when I get my car back from my spoiler install and boot painting.

wow im surprised you didnt blow the rca tracks on your amp, have a listen to it and see if you did any permanent damage.
It was going into protection as you were asking it to do too much. The input signal was ridiculously overpowered as it is designed to power speakers, not provide a signal (rca out)
