My oil pressure light no longer functions... and when my alternator shat itself, I noticed a stray wire with no home.. plugging it onto an alternator plug (while attempting to get alternator to work) made the oil light stay on permanently without keys in the ignition so i took it off knowing it must go somewhere else, this also means the bulb isn't blown in the instrument cluster. Does anybody know where this should go? I'm worried because my car uses some oil and i've had the oil light come on before so i hope to find it soon.. I think I recall seeing someone talk about it on here somewhere before but i cant find it.
Any help appreciated.. cheers every1

After extensive searching in the workshop manual, it says oil pressure switch wire is connected to the alternator.. can anyone confirm this? Maybe I had the wire incorrectly plugged for the light to be on without keys in ignition?
My alternator crapped out the other day (as it turned out the brush pack needed replacing) and I also came across this "stray" wire. When the alternator was removed I could see where it came from. There was something that looked as though it was screwed into the side of the block below the alternator. I'm guessing that this is the oil pressure switch.
Put it this way, I plugged the stray wire onto this "unknown" device and everything works the way it should :D

Sweet.. is it like a black circular thing? I think i found it.. I just gotta re-route the wire so it reaches. Mech who put the alternator back in tidied up the wires and made it too short. lol
Sorry for the late reply.
Yup, black circular thing is it :D
Hope it worked out OK.

Yep, "circular black thing screwed into the block near the alternator" is the oil pressure switch.:D

Wherever. It's fairly hard to miss, the only thing in the area with an electrical spade on the end.

If it were in the sump how would it measure pressure
On the 4cyl the pressure switch is on the front of the motor, on the lhs (as you look at it) about 2/3 way down the block near the engine mount.
On the v6 it is on the back, under the altinator, screwed into a fitting which also takes the oil filter.
I can not for my life understand how your manual states that this wire is pluged into the altinator?

I ended up finding it, plugging it in, and the oil light was dim.. and then stopped working. After mucking around for ages with it, I think the electrical bit is loose, and now can't get the oil light to come on at all.. so it's either loose, or the oil switch is fubar.
