Hey people, long time no posting! Anyway I have a question to ask from this fine community, that being should a TL magna with 60,000km on the clock be sounding like a taxi? The thing has developed this really irritating whine, not so noticable in first and second, but in third and fourth from about 50km/h through till 80km/h is when its most noticeable. Also the shifts aren't as slick as they use to be, and when driving it hard, full throttle upshifts on the tippy mode above 5000rpm is met with flarring revs between gears... hmmm
any help would be cool, im thinking it either needs new tranny oil, or i go to mitsubishi and demand a new box considering its still under warranty and all...??

Have you had it serviced at all the intervals? My tippy box has done 80,000kms, and hasnt been nursed, and I havent had that problem. So yeah I'd say take it to mitsu and see what they think. Could just need new tranny fluid or something minor.

sorry should have provided more info. Been serviced on time (usually a touch early) at mitsubishi since being a brand spanker. Its also the 4speed auto. I'm not sure if mitsubishi would have changed the tranny oil or anything in that time... i guess if it was supposed to have been done at a particular service then they would have done it, but then again dealerships are generally crap at servicing cars
Just to clarify, the oil/fluid in the transmission is really only there for hydraulic pressure so changing it won't really help anything.
Sounds like the bands need adjusting etc.

I remember reading that Mitsu dont specify a ATF change until 105,000Km???
Could be wrong though.
Thats true, you dont need to change it untill the 105 mark... but im going to change it every 25000kms just to be safe.

ive notice mine is starting to do similar things..
shifting doesnt seem to be as smooth and sometimes if i give it a bit, take the foot off, then go to accelerate again it will just rev as if its in neutral, then it will clunk back into gear..
will be asking them on tuesday when mine goes in for its 45,000km service if it's anything to be worried about.. will also ask about getting the ATF changed..
you're lucky though - yours is still under warranty.. mine a about 2 months out:doubt:

well with the particular line of work im in (courier), my car does have a particularly hard life, often running around carrying its maximum allowable weight, and im nearly always in a hurry, therefore nearly always driving hard. Dunno if this could have accelerated gearbox wear at all?

Whatever you do dont tell them you use it for courier work. There is a good chance you can kiss your warranty goodbye if they knew..

i dont see why using your car for work would void a warranty.. it is always operated within manufacturer specifications (im very careful to not overload it). What do fleet operaters do with their magna station wagons? presumably use them for work...
EDIT: i just read the warranty information, it seems the only way to void your warranty is to not service it on time by a qualified mechanic. Says nothing about what you use your vehicle for

Mmmmmmmmm That whining noise i had ended in a fuc*ed gearbox. The teflon coating has worn off the crown wheel and the sun wheels are vibrating. They can go for years or give out at any moment like mine.

speak to your mitsu dealer.. it will get fixed without any hassles.. as long as there is nothing dodgey with the vehicle.. write off repair etc! using it for courier work wont mean f+ck all!

I still wouldn't say you're using it for courier work, as written deep in their warranty clause it probably states something about the car being used for commercial use. They won't need to know so why tell them, and if they do ask why would they ask other than to avoid fixing it under warranty. I'm sure they'll appreciate:
'Yeah I've been driving it hard with it fully laden frequently' lol

Mine does the exact same thing but does the ATF change really solves this problem?

as you say, no need to tell them anyway, but even if i did and they did try and get out of it, i'm pretty sure i would be able to jump up and down enough for them to fix it

Not much difference between "fully laden" and a big caravan trailer on your towbar.
