Hello everyone,

I have been making several trips down to the Shire lately to hand my car over to Marty at Fhrx Studios to complete my install. After not having the time ( nor the skill for that matter ), I handed over the keys to let the master installer and his team work on the Bora.

My stereo scores a Pioneer 8650Mp headunit which feeds 2 Audison amps, SRx2 and SRx2s. Up front is a pair of Boston SL-60 splits perfectly staged with the tweeters mounted in the kicks. In the rear doors are the stock Philips 20WRMS splits.

The sub is a Boston G5 mounted in a custom box featuring 36mm MDF rear panel and 1inch thick Perspex. The Bora also gets an earthing kit and Optima to keep the car happy. Dynamat Extreme all through the car. Finally the car is looking and sounding great!

Thank you so much to Marty and his team who have had nothing but troubles from this car and have suceeded in solving any problems. Now just have to wait for the head unit to get fixed....

:bowrofl: Yeah that what I thought when I looked in the engine bay for the first time.

Splits go really really hard. Worth every bit of $500. They are great for heavy music but not really much else. Do sound good for pop, rock, heavy metal, R&B, dance/trance but struggle with classical, and go ok with complex Jazz tracks. They are only getting 65WRMS but they soak it all up and are very very loud. It also has a lot to do with the installation, MDF baffles, layers of Dynamat etc all help. :D

If you can afford the Morel 6 splits I would get those but the SL-60's are definately great value for money!

Which Morel splits are you talking about? There is a few... But yeah I have the Pulse 6.5" splits and love them. Looking at upgrading though to some better Morels and putting these in the back, just gotta get the cash!

P.S. That is one VERY tidy and neat looking install!! :D

Sorry yeah meant the Morel Elate 6, they are about $650. Very nice and low mid bass but the Boston aren't to far off it.

Yeah the guys down in the Shire do some fantastic work.

Looking excellent dude... really top-notch stuff.

I see you cannot get way from your beloved Bostons either :)
(I thought that Hertz HXS300 whetted the appetite????)

Look forward to hearing/seeing it in person.

Oh yeah, you have gone to the best in the state and one of the best in Australia.
I'm sure Marty will kill me now, but he is a great guy who does excellent work with top components.

It does come in 36mm, it is just not readily available (like at Bunnings). You have to know where to look and/or import it from overseas. I believe if you wish to import it and pay a stupid amount for it, 40mm is available also. Someone said 50.5mmm (2") is available but I have never seen it or found it anywhere for sale on the net. You could make some awesome speaker mounts with that.

ratmagna: Those amps do run hard but with fans that get activated there is still enough air flow to keep it working all good. You would have to run it full pelt for about 3 hours in 37Degree heat for them to shut down. Doubt anyone could stand it going for more than an hour.

Mr_Roberto: I think some heavy duty front house doors are made from 36mm MDF. But yeah it exists.

harlequin: I is impossible to give a price as it all adds up. Slight changes here and there can mean the difference from $400-$1500. Lets just say it was cheaper than what I thought.

MitsiMonsta: Yeah you never go anywhere else to get stuff installed once you have been there. Earthing kit is a must, car runs heaps better ( it has about 10x the electrics of a magna ). You can't feel and extra power but in general car loves you. If nothing else, the reaction I get when I pop the bonnet is enough.

Sticked with Boston because look at how sexy that **** is. The HXS look crap from behind. I did like them from a SPL point of view but the Boston just has a nice sound. The box its in now makes it play like a 15 with the punch of a 10.

Here's a little tip: you can have whatever you want if you have pockets deep enough.

As mentioned, 36mm is used in doors, so I guess you could find a door supplier and buy some from them if 36mm is what you are after.

You could always glue two decent (20mm+) sheets together for one big thick sheet. Dunno if the structural strength would be the same - probably would be better with an epoxy-based glue.

Engineers - opinions? (and yes it would be a b***h to work with, I know)

i know you can make your own by gluing a couple of sheets together with using PVA or areodiet poxie glues
but yeah if you have alot of money then you can get anything
i guess that its not really a common size when it comes to building stuff
but yeah the thicker the board the better the box will be, stop it from flexing on the inside

Yeah definately, it is so thick on the front and back because it is about 1.1m long and really skinny! Works really well.

You dont need it as thick if you can brace it but sometimes that is not an option...

As Mr_Roberto aluded too; you can simply join two or more sheets of MDF together to achieve the desired thickness. We use the thicker sheets to stop wall flex. Remember some decent subs can push in excess of 1000psi when angry.
