Black is fuel, white is water, white with a BLUE tinge is oil.
Its most likely the piston rings(oil), it sounds like its not the valve stem seals - does it blow smoke when you press the accelerator?? Still smokey when the car is in drive and the engine has warmed up?
Might not be as expensive as you think, just avoid mitsubishi, find a local independant mechanic.
The car would sell for about $1500 - $4000 id say depending on K's on odo meter. and RWC..
You can buy a stop smoke engine additive at any auto place, should do the trick for a short amount of time.
hope this helps

Valve stem seals is white smoke, water entering in the engine head and being burnt, when the accelerator is pressed (releases the water into the engine, hence the puff of white smoke)
Blue is a different problem altogether, provided you use your eye site correctly in judging the colour of the exhaust emissions.

Well my car blows blue smoke on start up.... I can smell the burnt oil!
Ive asked many mechanics about the problem - they have all guided me towards valve stem seals.
They arent dodgy mechanics wanting money either, they're friends and relatives.

Hi Russian,
The car only blows blue smoke on start up its fine once the car gets moving
The valve stem seals were replaced at 100ks the orginal owner told me and car has travelled 165klm now.
Im hoping to get 2500 with a roadworthy cert do u think this is reasonable?.
I took the car to a mitsu dealer and they told me the engine is fine it needs the valve stems seals repalced so i guess the original owner told me a porkie.

Valve stem seals is blue smoke mate. :P
Valve stem seals do not seal from water, they seal from oil. Hence when the stem seals leak, they leak oil into the combustion chamber producing a blue smoke.

The way I mask the problem in my sisters ageing TS is to put heavy oil in it, like ~25/60 or something, also a bottle of nulon stop smoke and a bottle of Lucas' Oil Stabiliser.
No Smoke at all until ~5000km, but then its time for oil change anyways.
Give it a go, cant do any harm.
shoot fancy using oil that heavy wonder the car moves at all. just use 20w50 with 1 or 2 bottles motor honey in it ,used to work ok on my datsuns/nissans. but best idea is to fix problem.
Gas_head how does your sisters car move with all that s..t in the sump. bet her economy is zero.

Blue smoke is Oil, do not know where all these opinions come from. Stem seals are just that, they seal the valve stem. If yo have water in your oil then you have far bigger problems than a puf of smoke at start up
The oil enters past the stem seals during the higher vacum of idle, when you next start it burns off.
A good test is to also let the engine idle for a while and then rev.
Rings will not cause initial start up smoke as any oil will drain down, gravity can be a wonderful thing sometimes.
I know they have been replaced but if crap oil has been used since or they were not done properly and were damaged when installed this will be the cause
Had the same problem (although in a 6G72) and replaced the valve stem seals. Problem gone :D
You'll also (probably) notice that the car blows blue smoke when you leave the line after sitting at lights for 20 seconds. I hated that

hey
i got told when i brought my tr that it was the vavle steam seals so i replaced em its pritty easy diy job. but now the rings are gone i would never buy anothor car where it blows the slightest bit of smoke.
p.s i tryed just about every stop smoke on the market and none of them worked
