hey i was thinking about getting my exhaust done, just wondering if it is cheaper for me to get a custom mandrel bent 2 1/2 inch pipe from the cat and probably a lukey muffler, or anything else any1 recommend. i dont want to much droning. or should i just go for the complete redback exhaust from the cat to the muffler. i got quoted btw 360 to 420 fitted for the redback kit. will the custom equivalent of the redback kit my the cheaper fitted.

I think the vortex mufflers are really good (how many times on here have I said that?! lol). They actually create a vacuum effect which would work doubly well with extractors. Gives a nice performance boost and a fuel saving, something which I do actually agree with the manufacturers claims. They're Australian and made in Queensland but not marketed that well here, they're more popular overseas. Their website is (and they seriously need someone good at web design to redo it for them)

There's a 1300 number you can ring, - 1300 VORTEX which I've never rung but they may help with any enquiries you have. The most important thing is that its installed properly, but the instruction available on the site are basic and easy to understand. Basically its about pipe fitment, if its not connected by the instructions the suction effect won't be as good or non-existant, in which case it would work like a normal sports muffler.
Mine doesn't drone, Barry's kit works well though, I had it fitted with my old sports muffler. So it may have droned slightly, I don't know! can't tell as Barry's kit was fitted before the muffler.
They're not overly expensive either, but well worth it in either case. I only have the zinc-aneel version, I figured the stainless is pointless as either will well and truly outlast the car!

I'm happy with the redback set cost $420 including installation. I was gonna get a lukey for $280 however the muffler guy seemed to think I would be back in after a week to have it taken out. (As my friend who reffered me to him did).

I had my redback setup for $450 + installation and I love it. It's not too loud but it does have a very deep note. No droning at all.

Depends if you want power or noise. If you want some extra noise go with the cat back (doesn't matter what system you get as long as the muffler is high flow) This will give you a bit more noise under load but won't really change the noise when idling or driving normally (this is by accounts from several members on here) There won't be any noticable increase in power, maybe 3-4kW ATW. For that price it seems a bit steep. You could get a full exhaust system for not much more and get better power gains from it and a better and deeper noise.

Its true the vortex muffler is just one part of the exhaust, but they do provide the most power increase by their tests (ok I know that isn't the best example!) but also from other tests that I can't find on google at the moment... I looked into it when I bought mine, and I agree with them.

I stuck a Magna Sports muffler on my 3.0L TE. Just to clarify, the TE has a near 2 1/4 in mandrel bent system. The TJ Sports muffler was a 2.5" inlet. Because of the tow bar a bit of fiddling needed doing, and since my resonator was cactus I decided on a hi-flo resonator - and then thought "blow it, go 2.5in cat back and be done with it".
I was happy with the results. There's a nice growl when accelerating, quiet when idling. Although I cracked the pooskies when going up through the hills with a full load. an hour and a half of drone was not appreciated.
I don't think we 3.0's actually benefit from the extra 1/4 inch. I'm certain that this contributed to drone.
If you're a droneaphobic, then going up a pipe size is going to increase your drone.
Just to clarify, I was happy with results except when pulling under load ... long distance droning is not fun!

Yes, normally long distance 'droning' is fun, except if you're only pulling under load... good point, sorry to hear you only got a 2.25" exhaust.
'I don't think we 3.0's actually benefit from the extra 1/4 inch.' Even at a 3 I would have thought every quarter inch counts!
nah, only kidding :) its not as if you're making up for a shortcoming by buying an American muscle car or something... (or trick out a Hyundai)

yup, i have a 2.5in redback system, mine also was around the 440 mark, sounds great, nice low level to it, and sounds sexy on hard accell, and burbly on those auto-2nd gear down shifts at the lights :-)
imho, im gonna have a 3in tip put on it before xmas, id like abit more note on cruise/idle :-) but othewise, money very well spent.
plus my fuel ecomemy has dropped about 1l/100 on average, im getting usual low 7's at 80-100kph :-)
defiantely buy one again :-)
