i raided the local supercheap on the weekend and bought some gear to get my car lookin good again, meguiars colorX, megs scratchX, megs gold class wax polish and a superworks buffer.

color X was amazing made the paint look great, the gold class polish did a great job aswell but i wasnt very happy with scratchX, i had a few marks that it didnt seem to make a difference to and was really really hard to buff off, anyone used it?

but yeah overall very happy the car looks brand new, it beats letting it go and needing a respray in 6 months like 3/4 of the 2nd gens on the road

i used meg scratch X and i found it brought the car up pretty shiny, the water is still beading on it and i did it about 3 months ago. it was frustrating trying to get it off but i thought it did a great job.

Have been using Scratch X for more than 2 years now... it's good stuff... but you are right, there are a lot of scratches it won't fix... it depends on the angle of the scratch (ie. how the car was scratched), as to whether the product does its thing properly or not... and it's damn hard to get off - try having a white magna like I do... and you find the spots you put it days after you put it there because you can't see it properly when it dries on white... now that's fun...

I use gold class all the time, it's very good... I am looking for something new to try out (Meguires Colour X is fantastic though), having said that I have been using Meguires Colour Gel wash and it is not that great... suppose it's horses for courses though...

so might have to check out what's out here myself...

The meguiars stuff is great - I would NEVER use anything else now as they do really make a difference - I use the scratch x and the colour boost on alternate times when I wash it and think it has made a big difference to the car.. it does not do miracles though and there are still scratches and some marks and as it is a black car they still show up a bit but it has helped a lot - even the quick detailer is quite good....

Firstly the superworks buffer is probably only useful for shining up your bald father's head; dont expect it to be able to 'cut' anything. You can use it to apply waxes and sealants, but thats about the full extent of its ability.

Secondly, to remove a minor scratch with scratch X you'll need to keep re-applying it to the area until the scratch is removed. (ie, apply scratchX, buff off, apply, buff off, apply, buff off, etc..). And you need to apply it with quite a decent amount of pressure to the pad.

Scratch X is a great product... its just a matter of using it correctly.

Spend About $90 on a small rotory sander and 2 bufffing pads, they will have enough power to buff polish wax anything, i would also get swirl remover 2.0 and use that instead of scarct x which is mainly a spot swirl remover.
also the NXT Tech wax is ace, $40 well spent

sounds good, i thought there was more to the scratchX than i was seeing, the cheapo buffer will do for now, the paint is in pretty good condition and it seems to have done the job well, but yeah the colorX and gold class did a brilliant job its just a matter of working on the few scratches better next time i polish it

Better off with a random orbital polisher than a rotary for an amateur. If you don't know how to use a rotary you can end up with burn marks and holograms in your paintwork.

Plenty of good online forums for detailing info: autopia.org, meguiarsonline.com etc..
Cheers..

i have used kitten and meguairs, meguairs is sweet stuff, autoglym is some of the best stuff out there though.
i use a buff and meguairs wet look, then a meguairs wax aswell. never cut! not unless the paint is faded n stuff

scratch x worked really well on my old car, but DONT use it if it is old and has been lying around! it came off pretty easy when i first got it, and i recently used it again on the bonnet and it was so hard to get off i almost cried cos i thought i ruined my bonnet! the only way i could get it off was to use meguiars paint cleaner over the top and pray... it worked luckily.

anyway, check out this link for a comparison of scratch removers. a lot probably are not available in AU/NZ but some are
