View Full Version : Grinding Sound

G'day all. I have a TP manual wagon on its last legs, a few months back I replaced the front and rear engine mounts and had major dramas getting the rear mount inplace. To get a bit more wiggle room I undid the gearbox side engine mount and used the jack to lift the engine pretty high to get the rear mount in. Since then every time I take a sweeping left handed turn at anysort of speed I get a low grinding sound, the CV's seem ok (no sound from full lock either way) but something else is stuffed or on the way out. Any ideads appreciated.

I thought I may have damaged something when I jacked the engine up?

...
Is this a pic of a TM magna? Nr 13 seems like the radiator overflow reservoir, but in my car it's near the windscreen wiper water.

I know how hard that damn back engine mount is to replace.. it took me a couple of days to work out how to replace it in mine. If you ever have to replace it again, try and get the bracket that attaches the engine to the mount off. The bolts going into the engine are very tight, but if you have the right leverage from a couple of spanners it's quite easy. Once you got that bracket off replacing the rear mount is a simple task :D
Just a little suggestion for future, since these magnas seem to go through mounts fairly fast ;)

How do you actually know when an engine mount needs to be replaced?

Or when you notice a significant increase in engine noise and vibration inside the car... which will definitely be the case in particular with the back mount (when the back mount on mine failed there was a horrid resonating vibration inside the car).

With busted mounts when you change gears you can hear the engine thumping around.
Start the car open the bonnet and rev the engine by hand and you'll see plenty of movement if the mounts are busted.
