View Full Version : Moving the battery to the boot
Have any of you considered moving the battery back in the trunk?
It's a heavy piece, which I guess it will aid more to the balance of the car, plus that you'll have free space for a new air box/intake.

I've thought of that too. Mainly because the TR engine bay doesnt leave a lot of room for cold air induction. It can be done as it sits stock..but it's very hard and you wouldn't get a big enough pipe to make it worthwhile.
The other way is to remove the airbox and turn the battery sideways as Magwgn is doing.
Dunno if that's possible for the TE+

would this make it "unroad worthy"? u reckon u could get done for it?
also. it would be a bit of a pain in the ass if ya had to jump start ur car.

Trav
how could it make the car un road worthy? u still have a battery.
it would make it easier to jump start ur car as you only have to pull up behind the car not do a u turn and park infront :)

It's not unroadworthy so long as the battery is encased in a well ventilated box.
my only question is how can you extend the positive and negative wires to the trunk ........ through which hole/way ?

As for ventilation, a normal battery will need this.
However, I'm pretty sure the dry cell ones don't have this problem. I'd still be keeping it in a battery box though.

driver: I got that information from the RTA website..so it might be different for different states...it simply said that any battery in the boot has to be adequately ventilated...I guess they just dont want to take a chance?
Anyways, there are kits out there that conform to these rules...and I guess as far as the wiring is concerned you'd just run it along the side of the car...away from the speaker wires ;) lol
Hehe, my made did this in his Merc.
His car caught fire.
lol @ him.
Anyway, the story is, he had a "backup battery" on a switch. If his stereo drained the shit out of his battery, instead of going "oh blast, I can't start my automatic car", he goes, "good job I've turned my stereo off, now all i have to do is jump start her using the back up battery." He didn't ventilate it, poisonous/hazardous gasses filled his boot, and were set alight when a spark from a switch or something went. Boot caught on fire, he sees it in his rear view mirror, goes "oh blast" and has a cry.
Moral of this story: Ventilate your boot-mounted battery.

If your going to move the battery to the boot, your will definatly need to put it in a battery box which are availible from most auto accessory stores such as Super Cheap Auto etc.
They must be secured well to prevent from sliding around in the boot.
Remember the last thing you want is in the event of an accident is for your battery to become a propjectile spraying acid all over the place.
Having an exposed battery in the boot is defectable in aus, so careful with this one.
there are tracks down the car where u can put cables , just make sure you use the right guage wire so you dont overheat/melt wires , remember if your only using one battery you are chargine/using that battery while moving :)
lots of people have done this before you see it in car shows where they want the engine to look roomy .

My Ex's Torana had hers in the boot...
The wires run down the underside of the body rail ... under the car..
The earth just went to the chasis in the boot. ... Id still run an extra - back to the engine to have a good earth point.
