View Full Version : Springs settling
After a day of ****ing around king low SPs are finally installed which claim to be a 30mm drop, but after measuring the difference the lowest it's gone is 22mm (center of hub to wheel arch) and that's the front right. The rear left only dropped 11mm  ?
I would be happy if it simply dropped 30mm all around as expected, I know they need time to settle in etc but it doesnt seem right for them to have to settle nearly another 2cms to get to the quoted height. Suspension shop said they expected it'd be 30mm straight away then settle/sag maybe another 5mm.
On a brighter note it doesn't ride harsh in the slightest and they're a progressive rate spring. As you steer into a corner at a normal speed it just sits flat instead of feeling like a sailing boat. I honestly can't see why these aren't OEM parts.
Can anyone give some insight as to how low I can expect it to finally sit after 500/1000ks? Stock shocks, 53000ks.

I have the same springs in my TJII, do me a favour, tell me what your measurements are centre of hub to the edge of the wheel arch and i'll compare that with mine tonight.
Mine dropped noticably, but it can depend on how you're parked. Make sure the road/whatever is perfectly level.

Whenever i have installed spings i tell people it will take a few days to settle to proper height.
so give it a few days and check again then.
Parked in garage so that's about as level as it'll get.
Front right - 387 - 21mm drop
Front left - 396 - 16mm drop
Rear left - 391 - 16mm drop
Rear right - 388 - 15mm drop
Wow rear right settled while it was in the garage :doubt:
If it doesnt improve it'll be disappointing to say the least.

No worries i'll measure mine when i get home tonight and let you know what my measurements are. They should settle, take it for a couple of spirited runs to wear them in maybe?

Cheers... I'd appreciate if anyone else with these springs could post their eyebrow heights too (center of hub to wheel arch). I'll head out for a drive later this arvo and throw it round a few corners properly and find a few shoddy roads to get them moving.

I have just fitted "Kings S/L" last week to the front only, am riding at 345 (eyebrow) 360 (wheel arch) which is approx a 20mm drop... Rears are still sitting at 335 (eyebrow) 350 (wheel arch), rears are running on pedders. I love the height of the rears althou still would love the front to go down to 350..

yeah i had low S/P's in my last car for a few weeks... both myself and the fitter said it was a joke... you really cant even tell (by looking at it) that its been lowered... we pulled them out and replaced them with the normal lows (45mm i believe).. the S/P's went back to king for a refund

I've been told the actual lowering is less than what's advertised. E.g King lows = actual drop of ~30mm, Super Lows = ~45mm. So I'm not surprised you got a bugger-all drop from SPs.
My insurance says I can only go 30mm lower, so I got Lows (i didn't want Super Lows for other reasons anyway), since the actual drop is roughly 30mm. And really, I doubt your insurance would actually measure it. And even if they did, and it's lower than they allow, you can just say the springs must have sagged :)
Of course that's a risk you have to decide on.

If they dont drop the quoted 30mm there'll be a stink and I'll get them swapped for lows... I'll wait and see what M4DDOGs settled to and possible Meh if he's keen to post his eyebrow heights, if its 30-35mm it'll be fine.
I got the SPs because they quoted a 30mm drop and I wanted a full 30mm and nothing less, btw they check the part number on the springs in a claim. If you're using king lows which claim 50mm it'll void insurance, like you said its a risk you take.

My tape measure is only in inches and the front is at ~15.5 and the back is at ~14.5, what's the exact conversion rate between inches and cms?

Can you measure both sides and average it? Eg my left is 9mm lower than the right...
It's the back I'm worried bout most it hasn't made a visible drop at all
An accurate mm measurement would be awesome

i used king springs in my previous car (toyota curren) and it was meant to lower 30mm, but i was pretty disappointed when i first saw it, hardly any difference!. they said it would take a few days to settle, but it actually took about 6months! and is now quite noticeably lower than when i first had it done.
the back dropped more than the front, but thankfully is level. just stick with the current springs, it may take a while but it will settle and be sweet
when i lower the diamante i'm doing 45mm in front and 30mm in back, due to the back always dropping more than the front and the horrendous front wheel arch gap

If going for looks than that's alright, but if going for performance you're unbalancing the car. Not that 15mm would probably make a huge difference, but still. Also even though you even out the arches, the car doesn't look level. It's hard to explain :).
OK both sides are identical, front is 383mm, rear is 375mm, give or take 2mm

yep yep, i hear ya. but me old car probably dropped 15mm at the front and 25mm at the rear using 30mm drop springs all round so i'm think the difference would likely be bugger all.
i'll see what the shop says about it when i go in though, for their (probably pimply 16 year old) opinion too.

this is exactly why i use pedders gear.
when the bloke told me 550mm tip of gaurd-lower lid of 17" rim on a lancer (front) and 540mm on the rear, they where exactly that!

2.5cm = 1inch
if that helps

whats your figure gap between your rear tyre and arch?
i've got a two fingure gap at the rear and the front
but i got superlows in the front :doubt:

hmm, i can't get pedders but there is an auction on net for set of 4 Tein springs for NZD290 with free shipping. not sure how low they go, but it'd cost NZD550 for Kings fitted...
Tein or Kings?

i want $65 per spring, plus postage

ive made a claim with a lowered car and they didnt look at anything at all... they just said, the car is lowered, the car has exhaust etc.. no mention of how much lowered
AND
part numbers mean nothing.. you can compress springs to whatever you want them to be, so a spring with S/P part numbers could really be a 60mm drop..
my car has stock standard springs if your looking at part numbers and colours of springs! :P
OK both sides are identical, front is 383mm, rear is 375mm, give or take 2mm
Cheers :D Rear will settle another 15mm for me, that's why it looks like it hasn't moved yet. 700k trip to sydney and back with the car loaded up should fix it.
Gremlin - thats my plan in the future. Get them compressed another 30mm, they're the same spring rate as the king lows so it will actually handle better than the low/superlow combo and won't have any bottoming issues :)

I dont have before measurements, but when i got mine lowered, it came off and the guy there said "did it make a difference?"...it did a little, but after a couple of weeks it dropped more and now looks really good for 30mm.

I have a theory based on no technical knowledge that the front right settles faster than the others because of your weight in the drivers seat; you are always in the car but you may not always have passengers.
Just something I came up with coz my front right is lower than other corners aswell. Probly completely wrong tho...
