Depends what is wrong, the tranny going into limp mode just means there is a problem somewhere in the system. Could be the TCU, could be the box itself, could be a sensor. You just don't know until you put it into a transmission place OR get mitsubishi to read the error code.

Any idea what sort of driving style demolished the gearbox (if it is in fact demolished)? I couldn't imagine it needing a rebuild or something like that at such a young age, assuming it was sensibly driven.

Would you tell some one not to do something if you were about to make $2000? Go the manual man, MUCH better.

I put this in another thread. You can get fully remanufactured gearboxes from a mitsu dealer for around $2200 fitted. It might worth checking out. My dad just had one done two months ago on his verada. two year warranty as well.

i had the auto tranny of my old TE kill itself. the car was on 120,000kms and the transmission i had put in was its 3RD. so it was averaging 60k a tranny. Good work Mitsu.

Cost me $2050 inc instillation and 12month 20,000km warranty

likeashot: Im interested in getting my Auto gear box checked out in my 3rd gen aswell because it feels like its slipping sometimes.

Where did you take your car to and how much did they quote for the service and diagnostic check ?

Cheers mate! And best of luck with you gearbox problems!!:D

Alright people it's official my box is screwed or as the trans guy said "severe internal damage".
Yes it does get driven pretty hard(170,000 on the clock) but thats why i got a VR-X
At the moment i'm looking at between $2500 - 3000 for a full recon from "South west auto trans" 12 month guarantee (local trans place highly recommened) by the why i'm in bunbury WA so not a lot of places to go down here.

So any help with how much and how to do and where to go in regards to conversion would be a great help.

Curiosity factor did he actually specify whats actually broken inside? I would definetly get a second opinion just incase it is something that can be rectified without the huge expense.

No but the cars no going forward or backward so the trans has to come out regardless

But it may not need a complete overhaul. Initially didnt you say it went into limp mode? Wasnt it driveable at that point? One other poster on this thread suggested getting one from Mitsu for $2200 fitted. If your auto is completly shot my preference would go down this path. Dont just take it anywhere. At the end of the day its your money just dont get shafted till you know exactly whats wrong with it. Its been mentioned previously may even be the TCU or some sensor or solenoid in the box that just playing up. If this is the case you may spend $200-$600 rectifying the problem then forking out 2k plus.. Look into it and find the root cause of the failure before you spend your hard earned cash.. Good luck with it either way.

regards

I checked the mitsi box only a 3 month warranty they sent me to trans place in the first place the car isn't really driveable it took 30 mins to drive a 10 min trip by the time i got there i could smell the burning trans oil.and it had turned into a bunny

Ok made my decision getting the box reconed with brand new parts max $3000 plus trans cooler ,Could have gone with a manual conversion through RPW that would be around $4000 but the back pocket made the choice for me ,unless i win lotto this weekend.

Drive it? What I was saying was that he could buy an entire car for probably around 3k and use the gearbox out of it, sure it might have a lot of ks on it but it should last a while longer, or you can interchange bits from the gearbox or the entire car for that matter. It was just an idea.

No i'd rather have all new bits in it and a warranty besides there's still lotto.:D
and i didn't think te's had 5 spd tippy's in them.

i'd say better to hav a new tranny with warranty rather doin transplant from an old 3rd gen without warranty the idea was good, but with magna's weak tranny u'll gonna need the warranty more.

Go for the tranny with warranty, it might sting but you'll get peice of mind. Or you can spend 3k to get a piece of crap car then pay someone to install a tranny that might be 2 weeks from doing the same thing, then have a car sitting in your back yard and try and sell parts on ebay from it.

if ya oil is black and is not going forward or backward it is most likely the clutch packs are completely worn...which does mean gearbox #II.
