the light is simply there to make you aware that you only have 100ish kms left and you really should fill up soon to avoid running out of petrol.

No it lights up when there's approx 10 litres (maybe 12, can't remember exactly) left, it's got nothing to do with kms.
If you drive sensibly and your car is running the way it should, you'll get about 100kms.
If you drive your car like you're in a race and your car runs like crap, you're going to get SFA, maybe 50kms if you're lucky.

my point was that its a warning you will run out of fuel soon and you should fill up !

I know that if light comes on u have to fill up, gf rang me and i told her that.. but I thought there might be something wrong with my fuel sender unit or my trip because of the light comes on = 100kms left on the trip.

lol i think the OP knew that!
All i meant was it's impossible to determine exactly how many kms he's going to get when we know nothing about his car or his driving style and by giving him the litreage value, he can work it out from there using his average fuel consumption.
From my experience the trip meter is very accurate, but when my E lights up, my range comes up as dashes "- - -".

My Gf was driving the car at the time, and she drives like a granny.

is it 10 to 15 litres once the light is on constant or wen it begins to flicker on and off

On a similar note, just how accurate is the trip computer? For something to do mine always displays instant fuel consumption, but the kilometres until empty doesn't seem accurate.

As long as your sensors are all working the way they should, pretty darn accurate! Usually within .1-.3 of the litres i've used is exactly how many i can get back in using the same pump as last time.

yeah mine does even on a flat bit of rd...then it finally stays on but i've normally already filled up before it stays on, though i can never get more then 60ls in and i know the tank is 72 just never risked going lower.

Yep, sure does, especially going uphills or when giving it a bootful. As soon as I get on the flat or take the foot off, the light goes away.

Then ~50-60km later it will come on constant.

my fuel light is well annoying, whenever it comes on and i fill up i can only ever get around 51L into the car, meaning its coming on with 20L still in the tank :(

The earlier 3rd gens, TE TF(and maybe TH/early TJ) fade in and out. While the newer ones like TJII and TL/TW seem to just hit a point and stay on. I also noticed that dads TW fuel gauge instantly reflects changes after fuel is put in while my TF will take a while to get up to the level. Obviously they use different systems to measure.

My fuel light will come on at about 100km Range To Empty (RTE) and when it gets down to 50km it becomes more frequent and then below that, it's constantly on.

I find my RTE reading extremely accurate and I rely on that more than the needle gauge.

For eg. When I left for home from WSID last night, the RTE said I had 150km left and by the time I got some, which was approximately 95km away, the RTE read 50km.
