Hi all,
Hoping someone can help...
My car is making this weird noise. It was barely noticable a few weeks ago, but yesterday it was VERY noyicable on a 1.5 hour trip on the way home from Rapid Bay.
It sounds similar to a dry bearing, almost like a whine. Not sure how to describe it, its weird.
I cant hear it in 1st or second, but can in 3rd 4th and 5th.
Is most obvious when you are doing 100kph in 5th and I take my foot off the accelerator and coast along slowing down using the engines own resistance.
Push the clutch ALL the way in and it dissappears, push it a little way in and it makes no difference, so I dont think its the thrust bearing.
Any ideas? Its got me stumped...
Cheers
Pete

maybe the sycro's are wearing out. have u tried changing the oil first to see if it make an improvment. thats what id do and if there's no change then id take it to a tranny specialists:D

Try going along at 100km/hr in 4th and then dip the clutch.
If noise goes away, I would heavily suspect it is the thrust bearing.

Sounds like it could be worn gear syncro's or shafts in the gearbox if it's with the clutch fully out, doesnt sound like a clutch problem i dont think. Perhaps a gearbox oil change, maybe change to VMX-80 grade oil, I've heard it's good. If you do change the oil maybe inspect the oil you drain

This was my first thought as well. Hope it doesn't end up being too costly. Get it checked out now before it becomes something major.

I did that. It only goes away with the clutch fully in. Pushing the clutch 1/4 or half way doesn't change anything...
Man this sucks, I finally get myself out of debt, car paid off, things looking rosy and this happens, I will be spewing if it turns out to be expensive :(

all I can say is dont go near mitsubishi for parts or labour unless you MUST like nobody else makes the part other that never buy genuine.

well i finally got around to having a quick look at last. I know stupid to let it go for so long but I have not had a free weekend for months :(
The oil is fine, so I'm really thinking its either the release or thrust bearing.
I noticed there is another one there, the input shaft bearing...

could it even be an idler bearing on a belt??

but it goes away when i push my clutch in... so I'm assuming is gearbox related. I don't know of any belts that are associated with the gearbox!

Problem solved!
It was the roller taper bearings on the input drive shaft.
Cost me $1540 all up to get fixed...
But its like having a new gearbox! No noises and I can hardly feel the clutch! :D

The bearings in question are found on these input shafts.
2 needle roller bearings: Number 6 and 18
2 normal bearings: Number 2 and 20
