ok for the past few monthes my gear stick has been crunching as im changeing gears,im just worried that my gearbox may have to be replaced soon and i dont want to spend $$$
im getting my car serviced realy soon, just wondering wat should i ask for them to do to fix the problem?
its manly haveing trouble shifting back into first and on the ocasion shifting into reverse, only happens a few times a week, just wanted to know if its anythin serious before im cruising around then find out my gear box blows up on me.
also wanted to ask my foot pedal for my clutch always makes a squeeky noise,is that sometin to do wit the springs on the foot pedal or is it sometin else?
anythin else i should get done wen i service my car?
my car has done 165000 kms on the clock
its a 97 TE 2.4 manual
and has been serviced 3 times since purchased(november 2005)
any help would be great:)

I used to have a slight crunch going into second on my TF, but it only did it on a cold box. So it led me to believe it was a lubrication issue, and sure enough after changing the gearbox oil the crunch disappeared, and has been fine ever since (over a year ago).

But if it's doing it all the time, I would tend to think the synchros are worn on the crunching gears.

could be the solonoid (sp) might be on its way or clutch maybe? clutch might not be engaging fully so it crunches.

broken engine mounts can sometimes make it harder to get into gear.

i dont really know wat a solonoid really does but its something to do when going into gear. someone will explain better

its called a synchro not a solonoid lol

if its only from 1st to second when its cold then its a common magna problem (change oil might help)

i'm with ashneel...get the clutch checked out...could even be the slave cylinder causing it not to engage properly. do check the oil tho.

I heard that Redline lightweight shockproof can help prolong dieing syncro life, alot of SAU are using it in their worn Skyline gearbox with good result. It may worth a try if you can get another 50-80k out of it.

Hey while topic of manuals does anyone feel vibriations through their clutch and accel pedals like a grinding? Some one else suggested I should just change my clutch but I asked a tranny mech and he just said it was the way the magnas where build?

yeah its a mitsu designed to have vibrations while you're driving

Could be a number of things another easy thing to check is the clutch fluid level.

Mine crunches ALL gears. It got better when i got the engine and box transfered in my Elante. This little thingy ma bob had a crack in it and wouldnt keep the pressure.

Does it in all gears if im booting it or downshifting when going fast. While on the subject, how much would it cost to get my box rebuilt ?

ok so far from the feedback i got
*get gear box oil checked
*get clutch fluid level checked
*get synchro checked
*get pedal pivots lubricated
im gettin it serviced next week il see how it goes, and let every1 know
any more help would be apreciated:)
and for any1 who wants to know how much for a new gear box, sometimes you can get them second hand for cheap but may be hard to get a hold of,brand new lookin at between 1500-3 grand from wat ive been told by friends and family.

i have a similar problem. fine when cold but gets bad when she heats up. my problem is 2 things: one, i need to replace the oil, and two, the clutch engages late. could b the same for you. put it in nuetral , engage the clutch count to 5 then shift to first. try this with each gear. worked for me. im gettin my clutch replaced pretty soon with an exceedy clutch and new oil. Only use mitsubishi gear oil other wise it can root ur gear box.

Wait I didn't know you had fluid for the clutch and the transmittion? I had my transmition fluid changed would that been different than the clutch fluid?

As above, get your gearbox oil changed, there is special oil for front wheel drive cars that crunch gears. Dunno what the name of the stuff is. Your clutch may not be properly disengaging, however if you have just had a new clutch in then it may take a little time to settle in and pickup distance will increase. Check your clutch fluid reserve too.

You can sure as hell use any gearbox oil you want in a manual. I've changed type/brand a couple of times. If your synchros are stuffed (notchy to get into gear, crunching on gear changes when driving ~20-40kph) then you're up for a gearbox recore. Replacing current gearbox oil with a thinner oil should really help before you have to think about a recore.

Something that hasn't been mentioned and was seriously wrong with my car was the clutch pedal adjustment. It seems to wiggle itself all the way out. Pull the cruise control wire off the clutch pedal and undo the locknut then adjust the bolt as far as it will go. Do the locknut back up and reconnect the wire, also take your floor mats out if you have any.

Give that a go first, also make sure you have the proper oil in the gearbox. If it's been crunching a while you'll cringe when you look at the amount of filings stuck to the sump plug

I had this problem once with my TP. Local "old School" mechanic put auto box oil in it. It seemed to clear it up.

That was my only experience (except when driving BMC cars, but that's what BMC's do!) with the crunch.
