HI all - new to forums.. just a quick question - any help would be appreciated. OK - i have taken out my instrument cluster ( TR ) to give it the wood grain effect with some trusty contact. after succesfully doing it and re-installing the cluster, when i turn the car on the temp. guage goes straight to HI.. car never loses a drop of water so am rather stumped, obviously something electrical. any other peeps had similair probs?? thanks

I was gonna get those plates - "TR-IFFIC"... but never did :p

With your problem, I would start with disassembling the guage and double-checking that everything is back the way it was...

I assume that it only started to act like that after you took it out to woodgrain it?

Have you knocked anything on the back of the cluster? Possibly a bad earth to the guage?

There's not really you can do to the back of the cluster tho unless you stabbed the printed circuit with a knife lol.

The car still runs ok and everything? To me it sounds you're right thinking it's electrical.

I cant think of what else it could be though? Is yours an auto? I have a spare temp guage I could send you, you'd just have to cover postage..10 bucks max.

thanks res, you should have got the plates, they would look sweet. as for the cluster, after pulling it apart , i was reluctant to dismantle any further as im not sure if there are springy thingies under the dials that will go pop and i may not know where they go leaving me up the preverbial creek. it looks like a little motor behind the temp and fuel guages but as i said - i aint to keen to go touching what im not familiar with. i dis-connected the battery in hopes of possibly resetting the ECU but to no avail, im sure its something simple, thanks for you help M8

edit : thanks also killbilly, your generous offer to send me your temp guage is kind indeed, and i may take you up on that offer - being one to not give up easily, i will persist. :) funny, i had to laugh - dont think i will be stabbing any printed circuits anytime soon!!! and yes - its auto and car still runs fine - well, as fine as a stock 4 cyl auto goes!!! cheers guys

There's no springs to fear when taking out the dials. They are little self contained units ;)

Unscrew them and the whole unit will come out. So dont fear :D

If you wanna take me up on the offer it's open anytime you want. Just gimme a yell :D

This happened to me when i first installed luminous dials in my TE. It turned out that i forgot a screw which was the earth to the temp gauge. Don't ask me why i forgot but i managed to :?

You never know it could be something this simple. Goodluck with it mate :D

lol no worries...I'd be glad to be rid of the bloody things lol! I bought them coz I was getting custom dials made up for my car..but I bought the wrong dials, the 4 cyls speedo goes to 200...mine is a V6 and it goes to 200..and this one had all the Auto gears in the temp bit...stupid me..I didnt even look at it when I bought it *slaps forehead* 50 bucks down the drain lol.

You can have the whole cluster if you want.

sorry killbilly, looks like your stuck with that cluster a bit longer. :( surely someone will give you what you paid for it especially that you paid $50 for it too, damn wreckers and their inflated prices!!! ( this may not apply to ALL wreckers, only some of the greedy-ass ones ive dealt with that i wont name ) thanks to all for your advice, and Aussiemagna for solving my simple problem, id send you some lollies, but im sure your parents warned you about accepting gifts from strangers!!!!!!

not right at this moment thanks Kill , my garage is full of computer parts, mountain bikes and other assorted junk i dont need, a second instrument cluster would only add to the pile - you know you want to keep it!!!!
