hey all, i just bought the car not long ago and it makes this wierd noise. when i crank it over it just makes like a continuos ticking noise/rattle. it appears to be coming from under the timing belt cover, but ive had the belt checked out and my uncle (who is a mechanic and is good at his job) is not convinced that it is the belt. after about 15 seconds it stops.
the car is a 2001 tj advance (petrol)''
anyone got any ideas/ suggestions?
cheers

exhaust heat shields or similar... have to hear it though
left hand side of the block (if you own a V6) there is an oil return valve that simply pluggs into the rocker cover, when clogged it makes this exact sound. mine did exactly the same thing, i pulled it off, ran half a can of degreaser through it and got something pointy covered in material to scrape out chunks, and it stopped instantly :)
(i thoguht mine was behind timing belt too)

What grade oil is in it currently? A thicker oil doesnt reach the top of the motor as quick and can cause ticking noises on cold, my car does this when i run 25w60 grade oil. When I use a thinner oil, like 15w40, I never get this ticking noise. So my suggestion would be to drop the oil and replace with 15w40, synthetic if it has low KM, mineral if it has higher km.

P.C.V. Valve. it get noisy when it blocks up. and can cause excess pressure in your engine as well. causing oil leaks. sometime from the oil cap (messy)
remove it, shake it, it should rattle relatively easily. and use carby cleaner

thats really bad.
in that ~year or so, your oil would most likely have sludged up and done some damage.

well when i drained the oil it was like friggen water, runny as
clean out the valve then, its nearly definently your problem.. especially considering the old oil that would have been building up inside of it, 10 second job, and youll be much happier

the carbon and sludge will remain at top and as it gets worse sedmienting to the sump in worse conditions.
either way, avoid skipping services

I have this exact problem that damn ticking noise on a cold start it disappears after about 15 seconds or as soon as I put it in gear. Noise comes from the front left near the belts. I'll try the solution you mentioned above. Forgot to mention there is a small oil leak latelly as well.

i'm having the same issue too
pulled everything apart and changed spark plugs etc, and cleaned and replaced gaskets on rocker covers etc, but it seems the noise has worsened.
I'll have to y cleaning the PCV and let you guys know what result this gives.

I cleaned the PCV hose connector (checked the the inner spring is ok)with carby cleaner and started it up to the cold start rattle which was a little annoying. However since then I haven't had a sound out of it:P It did have some chunky oil however not to much, but there seemed to be alot of dirty crap comming out of the connection when I cleaned it with carby cleaner, I used a good half can.
*EDIT* Nah its back again its hard to tell cause it doesn't happen everytime the engine starts when cold.

Looking from the front of the car, left hand side of front rocker cover, youll see a connector with a 90 degree bend in it and a hose coming off it. Give it a pull and it'll come right out. Get some carby/throttle body cleaner and give it a good spray, youll be amazed at the amount of black crap that will come out of it.
yea the big silverish thing on top of the engine (with the oil cap on it).. look on the left side of it, and you will see the little black L bend thing, thats it :)
(put in the most layman terms i could think of :))

tighten it.
I got 223,000kms. I been changing oil every 5,000 to 7,500 kms since about 180,000kms. Hasnt started ticking till now. This morning it ticked for ages, even when it was warm. When i drove it for a bit longer on main roads she didnt tick anymore. I opened the bonnet today and at the front of the engine at the top part where the 2 blocks meet its got oil everywhere....
Is this a simple change to thicker oil and she'll be right?
