dont let any f'wit from here scare you off... what was paid was the normal retail rate, big deal! most people here would pay the same, if not more! Then again, most people here aren't able to check the oil lever on the dipstick

Aviod retail chains like Ultratune/Midas/Kmart Auto etc (You pay full RRP plus a killer labour fee)
Avoid mitsubishi unless your cars under warranty..... (Apprentices are cheaper then qualified mechanics)
Find a good private mechanic, the rates will be slashed by heaps.... (They often explain the problem and charge less for parts/labour)
It pays to shop around, thats just my thoughts..

I have found the best way to get decent pricing for anything done to your car is to spend an afternoon ringing every relevent company in the phone book ei. all exhaust shops for an exhaust etc.
Then once you have the cheapest price call the second cheapest and ask if they can beat it. Remember, you are the consumer, this is capitalism and businesses should be fighting for your dollar.
Also ask for a breakdown of parts and labour so you can say, "well I can get this part for x amount (from wherever else), can you match that? and howcome labour is so expensive? the job will only take x amount of time (something they dont expect you to know and will often exagerate on), do your mechanics get paid x dollars an hour? thats unusual..."
This avoids a situation where mechanics blur the price of parts and labour together then add a huge markup. It is also advisable to buy your products from somewhere cheaper than a mechanic, (wholesaler or whatever) and then you will be able to get the cheapest labour as you will only have to find someone for fitting.
For instance, one place may be able to get cheaper redback exhaust sytems but have expensive labour prices. Another place may have cheap labour but not be able to supply the exhaust as cheaply. So if you buy from an outside source, say $400 delivered, then ring every shop in town for fitament, they are only providing you with one service instead of two making them bid on labour costs. You may get the system fitted for $40 dollars, where the redback may of cost $500 and upwards for supply and fitting from the same place.
This is applicable to many mods particularly suspension and brakes.
Of course none of this matters if you know people in the business or can install things yourself. I am a major titeass but I feel like mechanics make enough money from ripping of people that they should go easy on younger people struggling to do a few things to thier cars.
MMM ranting is fun, sorry for stating the obvious
