Upgraded my head unit from the stock one to an Alpine unit with iPod dock connector. Now I hate that connector, and also using the Alpine interface. Because I can't change directories "easily". So what I thought about doing was integrating my iPod dock into the car somewhere. So while driving, I can just yank out my iPod, do what I need to, then plug it back in.

But where would be a decent spot to put it? Not up on the dash of course, but there's not really much room on the centre console. Only thing I could think of was to build it into the cup holder area, but that'd be messy. I want it to be easily accessible, but not in the way.

Also, what would I need to perform such a task? I've got a dock already, and I have the iPod interface cable. All I need is a tool to cut into whatever area I'm going to place it in. Suggestions?

I'll take a photo of the area I'm hoping to put it in. But any feedback would be great.

hmmm a cutting tool.... that is a hard one.... hack saw maybe? possibly a dremmel? i could list the 5billion other possibilities but i cant be bothered, oh and if your wondering how to do it with a hack saw, drill a hole first, then start hacking, also why not just run the cable into to glove box or centre consol, save alot of dicking around and its out of the way

the cable did run into the glove box. But I don't like using the Alpine's interface to actually change my music. Fine for back/next, or volume.. but that's about all. And it's difficult to unplug the iPod, change stuff, then plug it back in while driving. So I thought I'd integrate a dock, which I can just rip my iPod out of. Then just sit it back in.

there's a mob in the states that does cup-holder iPod docks. it's pretty much a dock in a cylindrical piece of plastic which fits snugly into your cup-holders. I would assume you have to cut a hole into the bottom of the cup-holder to run the cable, but other than that it would be fairly neat.

I'll see if I can find the link, but it should be fairly easy to knock one up yourself (and I think they were fairly expensive).
