View Full Version : Low quality brakes
It's just me or the third generation Magnas have really bad brake systems?
I have a 10.000 kms VR-X and the disks are warped already ...... the strange thing is that the the steering wheel is shaking only after the brakes are hot.
I took it today to the Mitsu garage and the guys said that it's normal ...... many people come to them for machining of the disks ...... I mean for god sake it's not a Toyota Corolla to put plastic brakes in it ...... For a 1500 kg car I think Mitsubishi should have been considered some serious brakes.
Anybody had the same problem ?

All Magna's are like that unfortunately, well from my experience anyway. Mine has warped the discs twice since I've gotten it, which is really frustrating because I cant machine them anymore, they're at their minimum thickness.
Magna brakes, even though they pull the car up good, aren't as good quality as they should be and warping is the big problem we get :(

Yup it's true. Unfortunately the front brakes will wear twice as quickly as the rears, as well. Brake shudder and glazing/warping can be minimized by giving your brakes a 10 or 20km warmup before doing any serious stopping.

The magna rotor material is not good at all.
Best thing to do is to upgrade to aftermarket slotted rotors and y ou will get rid of the problem. If you are serious about improving the brakes then go for the EBC slotted rotors with EBC pads. I say this because DBA rotors and EBC Kevlar pads are not compatible with one anohter - this causes the DBA rotors to warp as well.,
I have the above package with the twin piston larger brake caliper on the front of my car and cannot reocmend it enough

A proven combination amoung the magna range are DBA Slotted Rotors with bendix ultimate pads. From the feedback i've heard in regards to DBA vs EBC rotors DBA appears to be a better performer, or more correctly the more widely used rotor...
Don't hold me to this one, but from what im also told EBC rotors are fussy on which pads they use...
DBA are pretty much good to use anything except EBC or Kevlar based pads.
Correct me if im wrong guys i've had to think back on this one :D

I have machined my front discs only one time and I have travelled a hard 114,000klms on them, and the car has 204,000klms on it, so no complaints from me, I also changed the brake fluid to Motul 5.1, which made a big difference. :D

I CAN”T complain TOO ,I done 51K & front pads are about 5mm thick, front rotors like brand new (maybe 0,5-1 mm gone), Only some shaking & noise I can feel at heavy breaking when ABS is working hard.

Yeah the brakepads on our th magna are shocking as well....i slow down to 40 -50 km/h and unless i am really gentle with my brake application the steering shudders quite badly. Its really bad during downhill braking. We took it to our dealer and he said wait till next year, cant beleive my dad listened to him

I agree with aussie magna, I put a set of DBA slotted and bendix pads on my TH and she stops extremly well eg.from 160 down to 0 with no fade.
I gaurantee that if I still had the old brakes I would now have a bent car due to a recent F/Wit.

If you speak to DBA and tell them you have Ultimate pads they immediatly tell you to remove them.
I did this at first as it was recommended and the disks lasted all of about 3000km before they warped and when I took this up with DBA they did not want to know about it.
I now have the Lucas pads and all is good.

Really, when i spoke to the DBA Engineers a while back thats what they reccomended. Anything other than kevlar...
Why's this Mal?

Mine warped withing 3000km and when I got on to DBA they asked which pads I had and I told them I had the Ultimate, they simply said that I had the wrong pad for the disk and were not willing to look any furthur in to the problem.
Got the car today back from Mitsubishi .... brakes as new. I'll allow them some slow driving/braking time to get to know to each other? (the skinned rotors & the old pads)
Guess what they did...... after I took my car back, found a big sticker on the winshield - "Top Lube / oil changed / next change 15.000 km" (I got the car new with 40.000 km free service). I had Mobil 1 in mine and they thought I haven't changed the oil since 5000 km, but I did at a Mobil1 center not at the dealer ........ now they filled my engine with that "Top Lube" shit without asking. This is not the problem ..... the problem is that they overfilled the engine ...... I checked three times and the level is more than 1 cm above the max sign of the dipstick.
Tomorrow first hour I'll go and argue with those dick heads again........then flush my engine and refill it with Mobil. Hope the engine won't make the oil shampoo tomorrow for 5 km till Mitsu, but I don't have where to put the car and open the oil pan to let some oil drip.

I can defintly state that the combo of EBC Kevlar pads and EBC rotors is far superioer to any combination of DBA rotors - you only need to look at what the majority of the race car people are using and you will see that Kevlar brake pads are the definite way to go.
We use the "Green Stuff" on the front of the cars and there are no issues with warming the brakes up first, nor do the wear the pads out any faster. I have done over 10,000km on the pasd so far and no wearing issues and I use them regularlyfrom the drags dropping from 190km/hr down to 40km/hr.
DBA is a great rotor with a standard bendix premium pad and if you are going to do moderate braking they are fine. But if you plan on going further than that I definitly beleive the EBC is a better option for youi.

so DBA rotors and ebc kevlars are an ok mix?

Not a chance EBC pads and DBA rotors do not mix - the DBA rotors qaulity of materials is not good enough to work with Kevlar pads they warp just like the standard rotors do.

so how much are we lookin at for EBC rotors and "green stuff" pads??

Anyone know if there are EBC rotors of a size that can match the size used in the Ralliart?
Mitsiman

Yes there EBC rotors and pads to suit the ralliart model - we have them exact package on our twin turbo magna with the twin piston calipers on the front.
The rear brakes we can't do yet with EBC rotors for the ralliart model...
