Hoping someone can assist me. I have a 96 TE Magna 6 Cyl Sedan fitted with an after market alarm hooked up through the factory central locking. Approximately every year I am required to purchase a new factory remote as the remotes are sealed units. I was wondering whether I can use a universal remote as I have been told by a friend that the car uses code hopping which is incompatible.
Thanks for your help

lol nah i doubt that there is a universal remote for them other wise there would be no point in having an alarm if anyone can just buy a universal remote. When you get a new one, they probably just make a new key with the old encryption or something.
I dont get why you need to get a new one every year ? is it because the internal battery dies out ? When the one you have dies, just try pry it open you might just be able to replace a battery or something.

Most aftermarket Alarms are code hoping.
The universal remotes you can buy (ie, Rhine universal from Dick Smith) only uses a fixed signal.
You, however, need the original remote to code it (for obvious reasons).
My dad had one of these. It has four buttons - So you can program alarm, boot release, even garage door.
But I really dont think you should have to be buying a new remote every year anyway. There must be some way to get the thing open!

I have one of these universal remotes. $35.00 and its yours.
pm me if you interested. If they have a solid frequency should be able to duplicate. However the Originals do not use this kind of frequency. :(
