Is there any way to tell if a cat is stuffed, without pulling it out?

Anyone know how much a replacement one costs? All of the searches I have done only talk about getting cat-back, not replacing the actual cat itself.

hit the cat with ya hand see if it rattles and do the same for the muffler or get it put on a gas analyser

No thats not usually the case....

If the cat is under suspicion of blockage, a back pressure test will need to be performed. Also check heat readings before and after the cat, with an IR heat sensor.

Hitting/shaking the cat will test for broken honeycomb segments. (if you can hear anything rattling, she's stuffed)

Easiest way to test, without a doubt, is by removing the cat and physically inspecting it for damage. That way, if it is stuffed, its already out of the car ready to be replaced.

Hunt around the wreckers, used cats go for about +$80 for a good one. I know a cheap brand new high flow is around the $200 mark. So i guess a new aftermarket stock spec one would be around $150?

Thanks.

Any idea who would do a back-pressure test (any exhaust place I assume?), and roughly how much it would cost?

The mechanic who just did my timing belt, etc., suggested the cat, saying that if the valve stem seals have been a bit dodgy for a while, the holes in the cat may be clogged.

And yes, I was expecting the odd feline comment!:D

Yeh a decent exhaust fitter should have the equipment to do the test. Also some epa testers who perform exhaust dB readouts, and exhaust pollutant tests, may have the equipment.

As for price... well i'm not quite sure on that mate, but i cant imagine it being too much.

Thats what ive suspected with mine, as the stem seals have been homo for 3+ years, so i can gather that the cat will be f'd in the A

I just got a 2nd hand cat and just waiting for it to be delivered, i dont see the need JUST YET ona high flow
