okay my car recently needed a new battery as the old one couldnt crank it over and was dead. New battery everything sweet until this morning. Battery 2 days old.

I turn it on fine... then doesnt even crank once. While trying to get it to even turn it over my alarm starts making wierd sounds, it's never done that before. Only set itself off randomly. Everything seems to have ample power indicating my battery is fine and then wisehead dad goes it might still be your battery.

Car jump starts fine... and i was cut as i said it wasnt the battery over and over.

Tonight i've had the battery on the charger and i tightened the alternator belt to have about 5mm play which is a bit tight but it was loose. Doesn't even turn over... Tried old battery with same results except signs that this battery is weak. Alarms going crazy too.

So guys i'm just wondering wtf is my electrical problem as im poor and im not yet a member of racq... will be in 2 days.

IE any ideas.

To sum don't mod cars unless you have a dead stock daily... i hate my car right now... lol nothing really major though, just costing me not having the transport.

thanks,
peace out;
aj

yeah it might still be your battery
i got a new battery after i killed my first one
lasted under a week then died
i couldnt even jump start the car to get it to the dealer

i would try another battery
maybe try one from your parents battery if you still have your old one
i would also check the connections on each teminal just incase the need to be redone

I've had the same problem ever since my dohc conversion too.

I usually have to turn my key a few times to start the car. But, if the car is jumped it starts first go...

I thought it was the starter originally....but i think its either the auto electrician did a **** job, or our alternators arent strong enough for the dohc...

You also might have to enter the fact that the dohc has dizzyless ignition...

yeah takes a few turns to start but it's not even turning over, hear the relays all click into place...

have to wait till a mate comes over to try the battery, the indicator on it says it's good but yeah...

it usually starts easy and the alternator is from the DOHC for the DOHc so it leaves me puzzled. Im joining racq and ill ring them to have a look at it when they can.

Thanks

I'm having similar troubles with mine, mine is the starter motor, it's on it's way out (or it could just be cos there's oil all over it from an old leak), starter solenoid or something i've been told can be a problem, but it kinda sounds like the symptoms u r having, just without the alarm. I turn the key, all the lights are on in the cluster including brake fluid light, and nothing happens for several attempts. I turn the key right off and on and after a few more tries it just starts then its fine. But in warmer weather it plays up more, some days more than 50 attempts must be made

damn thats weird... i hate my starter motor, i cant remember if the gto starter motor or the magna one was used, had problems with it initially.
As it joins the magna gearbox to turn flywheel so i dont know if i need gto one or magna one if it broke, hope it's not stuffed. If gto have to import a new one.

thanks, havent tried to start today with over night charging but joined racq so one of those guys can come and test my new battery.

peace out

If it is your starter motor you can usually get it rebuilt at an auto electrician, cheaper & faster than importing one, he might tell you what led to its death too.

Actually it sounds like you have an alternator problem. If your alternator dies, a fully charged battery can run and start the car for a few days without running completely flat.

What happen to you sounds like;

alternator dies
battery goes flat
replace battery with new battery charged up
battery goes flat

That clicking noise you hear is the starter motor solinoid clicking back and forth very quick.

Charge your battery or jump start the car, and then measure the voltage across the postive and negative posts on the battery, it should be over 12.5-13 volts even if you battery is flat.

First step, measure the voltage of the battery from the positive to the negative and then from the positive to the chassis, they should be exactly the same if they are not then its an earthing problem.

Second step, measure the voltage from alternator charge wire to the chassis, it should be the same as the battery voltage

Third step, measure the voltage of the power cable to the starter motor to to the chassis, it should also be the same as the battery.

Those 3 things should be fine, if they are then its either your alternator or starter, but my bet is the alternator.

If you can jump start the car, the starter is fine, which means its the alternator.

To test the alternator (rough test) go and check the voltage of the battery, if its less than 10v then its because the alternator hasn't been charging it and the engine/lights/stereo has been running off the battery instead of the alternator.

cheers lads it ****ing works; i love magna again... alternator belt was slipping, to tension it i had to do it different to what i remembered doing for magna. Has been holding charge and driving great.

Which means i wasted 125$ woot i have heaps of money... not really

you live you learn

I found i need to splurge the 30$ on a multimeter finally, thats a carton

thanks again.

So it was alternator hey, what a guess :P

Strangest thing happen to me the other day...

2 months ago my battery went flat because i was alligning the lights for about an hour, and it was a tired old battery.

I replace the battery and all was good, until last weekend I went to start the car but there was NOTHING. No dash lights, no diagnostics pannel lights etc etc. I thought the starter was busted so I ran some tests and it was fine.

The problem turned out to be the battery earth strap was bolted to fiberglass.... But the car ran fine for all its life I can only assume with the earth bolted to fiberglass.

Shifted the earth to a metal part of the chassis and the rig fired up fine and reads 14v when charging and 13v when off.

WACK?

Morrel of the story, test stuff before just going and replace it. My first guess would have seen me spend 3 hours removing and testing a perfectly fine starter :doubt: Same goes for odd running cars, cars using too much fuel, cars with misses. Test and diagnose, don't just replace parts

you could hava short in your wireing somewhere.this will cause ur batt to go flatt pretty quick..check batt 4 water etc ( if it's one of tho's) :doubt:

ok car died again today, racq guy had an multimeter so we found the problem was the corrosion on the battery terminals, was dropping 10V across the + terminal.

i've currently got this problem
a quick clean and shes good as new :D
i also keep a tool kit in the car just incase it dies on me again
