View Full Version : tiptronic shift light
Im sure most of you have done this. you have had your car in tip mode then you slow down for a set of traffic lights and forget that its in that mode you then take off and look like a wanker because you forgot to shift gears.
a shift light would fix this and i recon magnas with tiptronic should come with this anyway.
how hard would it be to fit a shift light without having to install a completely new guage with one on it.
i was thinking just something like a blue light i can attach to the window pillar so its in your face but doesnt look out of place when its not on. can you get shift lights that change go yellow at 5 grand then red at 6.5 grand ?

fysh, are you after a tell tale light to let you know when sports mode is selected? as this would be quite simple.
Or are you after sports mode light as well as shift point lights in one? as this would be a little more difficult but not impossible.

yes, it is possible to get multi stage shift lights. check out ur local autobahn or similar for the gizzmo range of shift lights, and for those with manuals (dont think it'd work with autos) they also have a range of LCMs (launch control modules).
Clutch the the floor, press a button, accel to the floor, only lifts to set rpm, green light, clutch dump, perfect launch with min wheel spin.
but back to the shift lights, the gizzmo 1 i saw had atleast 2 stage light adjustment (yellow then red) and it simply connected and worked with the factory tacho.
hope thats helpful.

yeh i might go down to autobahn check out what they have , if its all going to fit piggyback style on the normal tacho that me great.
phil what id like is something that will go on when i put it in sports mode then give me shift indicators.
so when im in normal auto mode the light should just stay off but then when i glick the gear selector over it will turn on and when it hits the certain revs it goes on then changes colour when i redline.
i think mitsu should have already installed something like this fact is the little led in the centre of the dash doesnt really alert you that your in sports mode its exactly the same colour as the drive reverse and neutral leds.
im sure i could get the instrument panel taken apart and differnt colourd leds installed but that be pointless for all the effort involved a nice little light in the windscreen pilar should do great. the hard part is probably going to be hooking up a switch so that its not constantly on when in drive.

in theory.... (not that it ever works in practice) if ur in drive then it shouldn't rev high enough to activate the shift light.
BUT...
i haven't seen a tiptronic so i cant be sure, but u can get switches with rubbery type spring loaded "handles" if u mounted it in the right spot under the console facia, when u pushed the shifter across it would click on, but the shifter would go past it so it could come back to centre. then when u put it back same thing to turn it off.
Problems would be finding the right switch that would do it and mounting it under there.
it COULD be completely impossible, but as i said i've never seen a tiptronic.

For millert85's idea of having the shift light only work in Tiptronic mode, just mount a push button micro switch just under were the manual mode shift gate is (i.e underside of gear selector gate thing). Position it so that the switch is fully pressed when the gear lever is in manual mode.
I did a similar thing with a mates Manual VN, only this time the micro switch was activated when the gear stick was put into reverse, this allowed the car to be started (like a kill switch for your car)

I haven't looked for a switch, but there has to be some sort of switch there already, because when you puch it accross into sports the gear lights between the speedo and tacho turn the green light off the D for drive, and the only light on is the current gear..........

there would have to be a switch activated, or ecu line you can tap into to tell and light up a light if sports mode is on. use a simple blue led on the dash somewhere (dont hack your dash) to tell you when sports mode is on.

your dead right Magnasports, there is no need to add any switches as there is already 1.
There will be an 8 pin connector that plugs up to the sports mode switches in the console near shifter.
Pin 4 of this connector will have pwr applied whenever sports mode is selected this could be used to drive an aux light and power up your shift point light unit.
However you would have to make sure the additional load on the existing pin 4 wire did not effect its'voltage level too much, reason being is that this is also the wire that tells the ECU you've selected sports. If it drags the voltage to low the ECU may not recognise it as a High thus not switching to sports mode. There are ways around this.
also the reason the lights change over is as follows:
The D light is driven by the standard mode side of the switch soon as you select sports you remove pwr fom D light and enable the ECU in sports mode this then drives 1 2 3 4 according to which gear you select.
