Guys, old debate i know but i just want some other opinions. I listen to mainlu punk/emo and hard rock/metal music.

In your opinions what should i do get a decent ( re $400 $500 ) SET OF 6X9'S or get a nice kicker l7 sub in a box and buy a new amp to run this ( $1000 Staff price ).

I do listen to the odd dance as well... as you can see i am lost and in two differant mindsets.

Sub pwns 6x9 for bass, so i would say subwoofer for sure. You're not going to get anywhere near the same bass out of the 6x9's as you would the sub.

I would definately go a 10" or 12" sub in a sealed box.

After going from 6x9s to a sub, I would never go back. They don't have the bass extension and their SQ is crap due to their oval shape.

Depends on your funds though. To get a decent set of 6x9s pumping you will most likely need an amp anyway.

How are you for space? A sub in a box will take up some of your boot space. If its a problem then amped 6X9's do offer pretty good sound. It just a question of whether you want to sacrifice some boot space.
If yes then a sub is the Go.

Space is not a problem as i have had previously a 12" sub and an xbox in the boot. I don't use the boot a lot.

I might look into the Kicker subs (they are the square black ones ) a bit more tomorrow.

If it's punk you listen to mate, then worrying about the low frequencies more than your midrange to high is a bit stupid. Go the 6x9's and a nice 4 channel amp so you can add a subwoofer on later, your 6x9's will scream along with the music and three chord songs, a subwoofer will just add the mistakes the bass player is making while he's tripping on acid in the recording studio.

First time I've ever backed 6x9's over a sub, but for the purpose of rocking out, 6x9's all the way. For dance though... that's another matter, start saving for that subwoofer after your purchase ;)

no you wouldnt have :P

depends if your requiring the space in your boot.. if you mostly listen to punk, then a set of Vibe rectangular 6x9's ($500) off a good amp would do you brilliantly they are fantastic speakers that will play down to 30hz and go loud.

if your not strict on space.. a nice 10" woofer sealed would be great! :)

I listen to mainlu punk/emo and hard rock/metal music.

very similar to my taste in music. Ive got a set of pioneer 6x9's with a 300W amp (MTX) and it sounds pretty good. Subs are all good, but punk and rock are hardly base orientated music.

A 10er is probably abit better for rock than say a 12er (similar speced of course).
The difference is definitely noticeable.

Assuming its a stock system(Is it?) the stock speakers would be lost under all the base.

Nope.
You turn the sub to a realistic level, unlike all these guys who all you can hear is doof doof and see their car boot expanding with the beat. THAT is is not the real purpose of a sub and it gives them a bad image. It should blend in with the whole system and just extend the bass lower and lower then the rest of your speakers can handle without drawing attention to itself.

Ok Guys lets Settle this little Quarrel

You listen to Punk and Rock.. Then Your Sure as Hell Aint into SQ..

You need a Street System...

One You can be Happy with listening to Dance and Techno, It has to Sound good aswell as go Hard..

I Listen to Rob Zombie through to Nick Skits... an SQ system Aint Gonna do the trick..

You Essentially Need Both..
For the rear Shelf, a Reasonably Well built Pair of 2-way 6x9's Like JBL, Fusion or Blaupunkt

a 6x9 has roughly the same area as an 8 inch woofer, so a 10 inch Sub is not gonna sound to good with the 6x9's Running.. I would go to a 12 inch Sealed..

Run Your Fronts and Rears off the Head unit Preferably one with a Sub out..
Run a 12 inch Sub off a 2x100 W RMS Amp and Bridge it.
Using the Sub out, either Kill the Sub all together for the Punk, then Fade it Back in For Dance and Techno..

Ideally, You really need to Amp the Front and Rears of at least a 4x100W Amp and get a 500 W Mono Block for the 12 incher..

When Listening to Rock.. I fade the sub off and let the 6x9's Crank..

Ideally, Poita is Correct.. a Sub Should be Felt and not Heard...

An "SQ" system will work for any genre as it is recreating the music as the artist intended it to sound. There's no reason why people who listen to punk/rock wouldnt want a system that sounds awesome...

Why would you ever want to turn off a sub for punk? All music no matter what the genre will sound better if you can hear the full range of frequencies.

Hey guys this is what i am running at the moment, An Alpine head unit with sub control running into an alpine MRV F345 amp. I think that is 4 X 50wrms.

The amp powers my front speakers which are PolK Audio DB Splits. The rear channels of the amp powered my now non existant sub. It provides a 300wrms 4ohm load. And i also have Cadence US 65 6.5 inch 2 ways in the rear running of the factory head unit.

I appreciate all your advice and maybe i might go a 10" Kicker L7 or a 12" and use teh sub control to mintor it to my tastes,

Nick

I agree. If you're going to turn the sub off.. don't even buy it. Punk bands still use a kick-drum therefore the sub will still be of use.

Anyway plenty of punk bands have loads of bass.. Strung out's latest LP?? Rise Against? Amen? 59 Times The Pain? even Rhubarb has some bass! It's your system's tune that is critical. Get the system designed right and your set. Don't just go buy bits and peices and expect it all to blend seemlessly.

I have MB Quarts 6x9's and a 10" JL 10w3 and, personally, i think it sounds great from Aqua (was on the radio the other day) to Glassjaw. Even better - early Incubus with slap bass and the odd breakdown. 6x9's are good with the midrange. If you go 6" in the front and rear you miss that midrange chunk a good 6x9 can give that only a great 6/6.5 coax can. (read great=$$$)

or you could just get a pair of orion h210.4's and run them off a big mono block, 2000wrms per sub, not bad for a 10 inch

i just brought a pair for ralliartgal's wagon too

Some 7x10s would put you in the middle of a 6x9 and a sub :P but i run a sub and wouldnt have it any other way. I have poked my head into a car with 7x10s on an amp and asked where the non-existant sub was.
