View Full Version : Unshielded Pod or Panel with stock air box?

As the thread title says, should I go with an unshielded pod filter? Or should I get a panel and just fit it into the stock air box? Both are K&N, but the pod, for some reason, is 1/2 the price ($140 for the panel, $70 for the pod). I won't be able to properly shield and CAI the pod for quite a while unfortunately, otherwise this would be an easy decision. Does anyone have an opinion on which one I should get?

Firstly you will need a K&N Oval pod and an adapter for the Magna MAF sensor. Round pod = no good.

No Difference between either except pod sounds a little louder induction noise.

Exposed pod will however suck in hot air from engine bay, whereas panel with stock snorkel or basic CAI will suck in colder air which in theory = more power, but nothing noticeable.

My recommendation - just go the panel, simply because you dont ever have to replace it.

Definitely don't go unshielded pod, thats a recipe for some bad performance... Panel for the third gens :) looks better with that over the radiator thing...

An unshielded pod is likely to lose performance rather than gain anything. If you're going the pod route, do it properly.
You should be able to get the panel for around $100. Chat to philcom rally or i think Megatron can attain cheap panels too.
Personally i'd go the panel, as it'd work out alot cheaper in the end. However, if you wanted a pod solely for the induction noise, then it doesn't really matter.

Thanks guys.

I didn't really care about induction noise i was more interested in cost and ease of installation. So as it stands im buying the panel, and not the pod.

Pods dont have to be expensive if you do most of it yourself, as others have said the panel is ten times easier, although the pod does sound a hell of a lot better and if setup correctly then it can also keep the performance levels of the panel!!

but yeh if you want the easier route then just go the panel!!

just go the panel... unclip, old out, new in re-clip, done. unless u dont attach the back of the air box properly and make a dick of urself trying to do it in the middle of ur first cruise

if u wanna check out the panel, let me know and i'll show u on the weekend.

after buying a pod for my KR and returning it with in 15mins due to fueling going straight out the doot, leave it as factory intended just improve on it by putting a panel in it. I did

i dont know if it could be fitted to the third gen, but i just fitted a Carbon fiber airbox to my golf with a 3" rubber tube that sucks air in from the front quarter panel.

How much did that cost? Sounds like an interesting mod. Something to save towards.
