2nd gen or 3rd gen?
$3k for a 3rd gen reco sounds about right, a cheaper option would be a low km 2nd hand engine.

You can try ringing around some wreckers, but make sure you get some sort of warranty just in case.
Ebay has popped up a few recently, one with low kms ended up selling for about $5-600 i believe.

3.0's are fairly expensive as they havn't been made for quite a while, get yourself a 3.5L u can pick em up for round 1.5k+ (i got a ralliart for slightly more than that)

But if he get's a 3.5, won't he have to fork out more for an engineers certificate?

the 3lts are around every where but the 3.5 are just as easy to find.
one guy on ebay was flogging them off for $300 caz he had too many of them

I was under the impression that if a larger engine was offered in that model range (i.e Verada, and later model Magnas) and the braking system was the same, there is no need to get it engineered.

Besides it's a bolt in proposition, exactly what would need engineering?:D

u would need a mod plate showing the new engine number... and its still classed as an engine swap, its just because the brake/suspension hardware is the same it doesn't need to be changed to meet the requirements.

Dont need mod plates or certificates.. Bolt it in, give your states motor authority your new engine number.. end of story .. the model came with a 3.5litre in the series so no need to do any of that stuff

This is what you need to read in regards to engine swaps.
ALWAYS contact the RTA before doing any major things like this. Get it clear and in writing so you can rest assured of the rules.
