Is it normal for the 2nd gen Catalytic converter to be hollow inside? Absolutly hollow?
Like nothing inside it period?
I thought these were supposed to have honeycomb sections in the middle?
Thing is i see no honesycomb in this spare one i have...
just some confirmation here i am not dreaming?

Aparrently they're only supposed to last 50-60 thou K's.. The honeycomb turns some bad gasses into H2O. If you're running a hollowed cat and the EPA give you an emissions test, your on your way to ass-rapin'-heavun son. (gaol).

Always wondered what the chances of the EPA doing a test are though?

When would this happen? Is it part of your rego? ???

Im not to sure!
But yeah its from a dead stock car, dead stock exhaust, and this looks like the same cat i have!
ANy reason to why it would be hollow?

when i first beefed up my engine i had a 2.25" press bent exhaust system with a hi flow cat. we put it on the dyno running motorsport 100 race fuel and glowing chunks of melted honeycomb stuff came flying out. after we blew all the crap outta the exhaust it made another 4hp atw. no backfire issues or anything. i have since changed to a 2.5" mandrel system with a 750cfm rated hi flow cat.

anyways point is it will probaly make ur car have more power but it is bad for the environment. also i doubt it will shoot flames! especially with the standard muffler on there.

do not fit that to your car paul.
with that cannon hanging off the rear, and the wing, and the ride hight, you will probly get epa'ed at some time, probly for noise, from a **** of a cop.
get one of those 2.5" high flow magnaflow cats you showed me

Heh... yeh but with a straight-through exhaust he might be able to shoot flames. lol

Only reason your mate woudl have had back fires would be an exhaust leak or bad tuning.

The cat being hollowed out will reduce performance unles a correct size pipe is then welded through the inside to keep flow going.

You are recommended to get a new one, the high flow cats rob you so little power even on a dyno the difference is negligable.

They have high flow ones on ebay for about $160ish....Worth it?

Mal, is it strange to see that on a stock car?

The empty cat? NOt really, back in the early 90's a lot of exhaust places did this when they had rattles and the customer complained. Usually they would weld a pipe in however some did just punch it all out.

if you ever find that your exhaust place has done this, report it to the epa.
