that first one is the one i've got, what u do is mount it under the front of the battery and set up the hoses in parralell(sp) to the original radiator for the ammount of work reqired and fidgeting if they use good connectors n stuff $280 is a pretty good price as u also need to top it up with tranny fluid aswell afterwards, u need the hose clamps too, i recomend if u'r gonna get a tranny temp gauge any time in the future u either install this at the same time or get them to

First one is a good design, second one is far, far, far, far less efficient.
The ones that have lots of little tubes slow down the fluid so it actually has a chance to dissipate the heat to the air. The other type (continuous flow) is crap, because it has a really poor thermal transfer rate.
Repco have a good one for sale as well - PWR brand, actually looks well made - the 'large' size is $104 on special. Supercheap have the Daves Craig branded tranny coolers for $119 for the V8 sized one. Bigger is better. If it has a thickness of about 20mm, and is roughly the same size (or bigger) than your average mouse mat, then its probably OK.
Someone was selling off some for $15 each, brand new from a machinery auction that looked pretty good - crossover flow though (meh, just make sure inlet is at top, not bottom) - seriously big though - 420 X 170 X 20, 20 row (so 10 row flow in/ 10 out). Problem is that it would look like an intercooler through the grille (some people like that kinda thing though).
Mount the cooler in front of your airconditioning condenser, and the plumbing goes in series with the plumbing coming back from the radiator cooler TO the transmission - radiator is pre-cooler, then you run it through the new tranny cooler. You do have to cut pipes though so if you are uneasy doing this, ask the tranny shop how much to just plumb the cooler. (Ie. you mount it, they run the pipes)

Parallel? Why? Every installation guide I have seen says after the factory cooler in series - theory is that the cooler with the greatest flow does the greatest work.
Factory cooler is just a loop of pipe that sits at the bottom of the radiator, so not much flow restriction.
Aftermarket coolers are restrictive (they have to be - the more surface area to transfer heat to, the more drag and turbulence).
Fluid follows the path of least resistance, so while the aftermarket cooler will be doing something, its effect is nowhere near as great as if it were in series.

I think that those are the ones that Heath was talking about, they are plenty big enough that's for sure :P. Aluminium is good as it has good heat transfer, painting it black would also help, also make it look less like an intercooler lol.

What is the outside diameter of the inlet and outlet pipes ?
(not of the heads on the ends)
Thanks.

Go to a wreckers and get one from a TR/TS, the 3rd Gens have mounting holes on the passenger side, whack it on, run some hoses and youre golden, 1 hour work max.
Need pics? I can take some 2moro if needed.

my mechanic charged me $130 to fit change the oil in my tranny

would you be able to post pics? i'm trying to figure out how the air would get to the cooler in that position. Thanks.

Second Gens all came with Trans Coolers, they are about $20 from most self serve wreckers, my Falcon has one and is awsome and flows well also
