I want to change the stock steering wheel with an air bag to a sports wheel with no air bag. My question is : Are there any wires running to the air bag (for activation) if so, would leaving the wires disconected upset the ECU or any other electrical components or the passengers or side air bags.

While removing the stock wheel, what is the chance of the air bag deploying???

In terms of leaving the wires disconnected - yes it would cause problems as you would constantly have the SRS light on the dash.

Just get your current wheel recovered.

its illegal to change a stock steering that has an airbg to one that doesnt. its count as a defect, but if u choose to change it over, the new steering wheel should a wire that still maintains a connection for the airbag, confusing the ecu to think theres still an airbag there. not sure bout the remvoing part of the airbag

or pull your cluster out and take the bulb out from behind the airbag light.

You'll loose your cruise control as well if you have it. Make sure the battery is disconnected when taking out the airbag.

yeah.. as Lenny said, it is illegal to change a steering wheel to one with no bag if it already has an airbag.

As you asked would it affect the passenger or side airbags I kind of gathered you must have a TL or TW Magna.

Why do you want to change the steering wheel anyway, is it just for the look? Because personally I wouldn't bother, having an airbag vs. no airbag is better if you ever crash anyway. If you want a sporty one (assuming you have a ES or LS) why not try and find a TL/TW VRX steering wheel at a wreckers or from Mitsu.

I got a AWD TL and you can get a leather air bag one. And while you are at it, get a the gear stick in leather (AWD/VR/VRX models)
