Hi guys,

My boyfriend and I bought a 2002 magna brandnew last year. Ever since we've had the car, we've had a few problems, that the dealer just can't seem to fix (or won't, either way!!). Wondering if anyone has any ideas???

1. The rear breaks make noises - they did say that one of the calipers was stuck on, and they say they've fixed it, but its still making the noises - we are now stuck with a noise like the break pads are metal on metal - even when we arent breaking. Any ideas??

2. We have a wierd juddering coming from our gearbox (5 speed manual) - it wouldn't suprise me if my boyfriend has done a gearbox mount or something - but still - it makes it hard to take off, and generally happens when the car is cold and you are turning a corner - generally to the right. Any ideas???

Thanks heaps guys!!!

yes i have the same scraping noise from the car and ive heard other magnas with that noise as well. i took it in for warantee and it was ok for a week and now its back they said it was the handbrake and that they would 'deglaze' them or something but it never worked. if they do fix it please come back and tell me what they did.

the juddering i dont know much about that but it should all be under warantee keep taking it back till they fix it.

Id say that when the back brake locked it did make the pads glaze over, causing the sound, and lack of braking power.

Deglazing is easy, take off your pads and give em a good scrub with some sandpaper (doesnt have to be too fine) and get all the shiny glass-looking stuff off :) Alternatively replace your pads :D

Many heavier cars have this problem. I have experienced it myself, It is very frustrating and puzzling. To me it was a very fine scraping sound, with a slight metallic edge - like someone sharpening a knife blade. It also sped up as the car sped up.

If you pull the handbrake a slight bit shile you are driving (try not to actually contact with resistance, just enough so you can feel it) then it stops it for a few days. It has something to do with the existing brake pads & handbrake cable setup in larger cars. There's my 10 cents, sorry for the big post. :?

I had this same problem in my R33 Skyline. In fact it is a very common problem in them.

The cause was the stuff used to hold the shims together behind the brake pads.

Remove this (it's like RV silicon) and the noise disappears with no effect on braking. The shims (in Skylines at least) where only there to stop noise and shudder in the first place.

Run this by your dealer and see what they have to say.

Also check that the rear hand brake shoe isn't sticking to the drum (inside the disk).

do a couple of good old handbrake turns, might fix the problem :D
