Was just about to do my first oil change in the tj and the manual mentions replacing the oil plug "O" ring when you change the oil. I'm just wondering if it's necessary to get a new "O" ring every time I change the oil? If so do I have to get them from mitsubishi or will autobarn & supercheap have them?

I replace mine everytime. Dont know if you HAVE to but for a genuine oil filter and O ring its only $11.90. The O ring is $0.77. I get them from Mitsi.

For like $1 for an O ring just replace it.
The old one may not seal again.
As with all gaskets, USe them and as soon as the seal is broken replace it

It's all up to personal preference...
The old seal probably won't leak if its in decent condition and the plug is tightened propperly... but if it does, the worst that will happen is a spot or 2 on the driveway. You wont notice a difference on the dipstick.
But definately replace the o ring if it looks mangled or torn.
Easiest/cheapest way to do it is buy the o rings in bulk. Buy 10 or 20 at a time, it'll probably equate to around 20c a seal... instead of around a dollar. That way they're always handy every oil change.

Thanks guys.Yeah I'll go a buy a bag of them tomorrow, I might do the oil filter as well, wasn't going to bother as the last service was 1k ago, but I'm not happy with the oil they put in.

oh yes very true, at my work our main product is hydraulic seals and orings.
over the counter i'll charge $1 for one or twenty orings. it ain't worth charging you 5c for one.

Yeh definately do the filter.. Can never change it too often. :D
Make sure ya get a genuine mitsu one, or better... no cheap bursons, ryco, cooper, etc brands. As they generally change oil pressure for the worse... not to mention less filtration in some of the cheap-ass ones.

toowong mitsubishi charge $17.00 for the filters and $2.80 for the "O" ring according to them if i bought 10 "o"rings which was my plan, they would charge me $28. Has to be the worst mitsu dealer in Queensland they mark up everything.

Yeah isn't the ryco filter a premium one?
I'm trying a Purolator pure one filter at the most.
After Several 1000 km's no problems as yet.

A oil filter is an oil filter, Ryco/Mitsu/Cooper etc - all made in taiwan (probably)
Provided its made for the model your putting it on then theres no problem.
Regarding the O ring - Use a flat piece of lead, punch a hole in it, cut it into a circle and use it instead. Ive been using the same piece of lead for years.

Mitsu have their standard 1000% markup though. Don't be fooled by their filter price reflecting quality.

interesting, wonder how that creates a seal, the lead woudn't exactly crush down and create as clean a seal as what a rubber o-ring would.
I guess there wouldn't be a huge deal of pressure behind it to push the oil out past the thread
but hey if its working for you so be it.
oh and for paying $7.80 for an oring.. gotta love Mitsubishi's markups! :bowrofl:

Next time you have the chance... compare a few different oil filters, look at the internal design, drain back valve design, thread quality, seal quality, theres many variables with the different brands... all will give you a slightly different oil pressure, some worse than others...
'Premium' marked on the packet doesnt mean a thing... its like buying black & gold toilet paper and it says 'premium' on the pack... you know its not premium though because after using it for a week you get sore and cant sit down comfortably...
If you do have to buy a cheaper filter, get ryco.. probably one of the better of the cheap **** filters... but try to at least go genuine or better.

One more question, I have to buy a socket for the oil drain plug tomorrow. It's a bit hard to reach but is it 24mm?

Yeah, I just got a 24mm socket to do my oil. It's a loose fit but I don't think a 23mm will do. Very unlikely to be imperial.
All I have to do now is find an oil filter wrench(end type). Those filters on TJ's are so small.

I don't think I have EVER changed on o-ring when changing the oil on any car I have ever owned in 15 years of driving. And I've never had a problem with it either.
It may be regarded as "best practice" to do so, but you're not going to get into any trouble if you don't. Do it if you want to, don't worry about it if you don't. From my own experience, I've never seen anything to suggest it was actually a required part of an oil change. I just put the sump plug straight back in, and all I ever do is just wipe it clean of oil first.

Crap! When I first bought these o-rings they only cost 45 cents or free and is now 90 cents each! This is incredible! Does Bunnings sells similiar?
I get my oil filters elsewhere as it is cheaper. 9.90 for mine. Z411 for 2.4L

Buy your genuine filter at that price at Phill Gilbert's in Lidcombe and they throw in the o Ring free...
