View Full Version : Crank Seal and Idle

After doing all this work i still have a few issues i just need a quick enlightenment on.
Crank seal...Mine seems to be rooted, as theres oil pissing out on the RHS of the engine and was burning a bit of it today (im not game to lift the bonnet after seeing smoke....so ill look tomorrow, hopefully no other seals have gone.)
Whats the go for crank seals? Im gonna get a mechanic to check this out but how hard are they to replace? Expensive job?
Also my idling.
It either idles too low in D (200-300) and idles fine in P (750-800), or the other way around, and idles fine in D (530ish) and too high in P (1100).
Now the idle screw thingy on the throttle body has been tampered with a bit so im wondering how can i get my nice setting back to normal?
And today when i put the air con on (as people in VIC would know it was like 40deg today) it went down to 100...then up to 550....down to 100, back up to 550....
Anyone shed some light on this? or will this just need a little "tuning"

Remember the seal i pointed out to ya that was possibly leaking when the heads were coming off? Thats him... so if ya remember correctly, timing case and V belts have to come off... no biggie there, and pulley and timing belt have to come off too. Then its just a matter of diggin the old seal out and tapping the new one in. :)
As for your idle problem.. it sounds like an ISC or TPS problem. Try clean up the TPS with some carb cleaner, and re-set the ISC motor to factory specs if you can get ya hands on a multimeter.
If not then the idle air bypass screw needs to be adjusted... just give it a spin until idle is at the correct speed. :P

the easiest way to do a crank seal, that I heard is...
Get the car up on a hoist or at least the front end off the ground then
undoing the engine mount to drop the motor down so you car get to the pulleys and seal easy.
I think the wheel might have to come off to.
I got a mechanic to do mine and it cost about $180 but I had alot of other stuff done too.

Wheel definately has to come off lol. But on the 2nd gens i think you don't have to drop the motor down at all. :)

Sweet.
Im hoping its just that seal, And im hoping its flicked oil all over my engine bay, cause i found a tiny bit on the bottom of the rocker cover (front) and it couldnt of come from anywhere else bar hopefully that seal.
Sounds like a resonably tedious job i hopefully have no part in doing:)
Thanks for the input guys.
Also while im here, whatelse, POSSIBLY could it be?

The oil? yeah its probably that...ill clean it up....looks pretty dusty now...
But that problem is FIXED now...however the steering still does seem to be a tad creeky at times..

I'm having the same idle problem and it's so damn annoying, It also only seems to occur on hotter days, or maybe it's just more evident when it's hot. I've tested my ISC motor and the fast idle air valve and they seem to be in correct working order. The next thing I'm gonna do is make up a LED tester that'll show when inputs are put through to the ISC motor, I remember someone on here doing that before.
I remember reading on here somewhere that some ECU's had idle problems caused by a leaking capacitor, although I have a feeling that this was only on the 4 cyl's.

Rang my mechanic and he said he replaced the crank seal when he did the timing belt about 2 years ago at the 200K service, its only done 23K since...
so now im pissed off cause he said he doesnt think that can be it!

get it check anyway, it might of been a bad seal.
A good mechanic will be able to know straight away

Sure looked like it was leaking from memory... Mine was only done about 10,000kms ago... and i'd swear its pissing my expensive oil out everywhere too. :doubt:

Well what im gonna do is high pressure all the old power steering oil off.
Then ill see what happens from there i guess.
