Hey all,
I've been pondering on upgrading my subs.
I currently have two 10's in a fully sealed custom built enclosure. So obviously if I buy 2 new 10's, they would almost definetely just be a direct swap.
But what I'm wondering is whether or not a single 12 would do a better job.
So say i've got $300-$400 to spend...
Do i buy two 10" subs for $150 - $200 each... or one 12" sub worth $300 to $400?
I do prefer sound quality over downright SPL, but I would love a little taste of somewhere in the middle.
BTW: I listen to everything from top 40 & RnB to Funk, Retro and Jazz and swing.

Gonna make the box urself if you upgrade to a 12?
Keeping in mind a reasonable box is around $150 this may affect ur options.

Yeah, building the box myself.
I've done plenty in my time.
So the money is purely towards the drivers.

that and your current 10" box may not suite the new 10's, personally id think the if your after sql as people so affectionally call it id go with a better quality 12", but just wait for tim to reply again, or possibly woob, but yeh, 12 will play lower, and a better quality sub will more than likely have better sound qualities/reproduction then lesser model 10's

Yeah definetly 1 sub over 2 lesser quality subs.
A million crap subs will still sound crap. I say 1 x 12 in the right box. You'll be laughing.

One way or another, I can rebuild a new box.
I have the software to design correct box dimensions according to thiele/small parameters.
So that doesn't bother me.

the JL audio W3 is an awesome sub for clarity and it needs bugger all to run it. around 350Wrms. i have one in mine and the thing cranks. i found mine in a factory sealed enclosure at JB hi-fi for $400. the thing is a weapon i tells ya.
personally.. 1 10 over 1 12 :) if you hunt second hand you could find a JL 10W6 for under $400 (i got mine for $300, practically brand new)
i used to be a fan of 12's and 15's... until i got my W6 running, now im addicted to 10's :)

I was actually looking at that!
What size is the manufacturers box that it came in?
Any dimensions or model number?

i'll have a little poke for you tomorrow mate. it's not a very big enclosure at all. i'll vouch for 10's as well. i have a farenheit 10 in ym ute and this thing makes your eyes rattle. powered by the same amp running the W12. it's up to the individual i reckon. 12 is a happy medium.

I got the spec sheet for the JL of their website.
Looks like the box that's recommended is 1.25 cubic feet.
Looks like i may have to rebuild! yay! Weekend job!
