Hello!
In the old TS it has some fuel left in there. Around half a tank and I'd like to take that out before it's off to the wreckers.
How do you do this?
I know some people that have done it but i'm not sure what with or how?
If anyone could help, that would be great!
Cheers

get a long bit a clear hosing
put one end into the tank and start sucking the other end
have a jerycan or similar ready and dont swallow any
or you might be able to make a pump for it to suck it out
the ones that you use for fish ponds work a treat
dont know if its recommended for this kinda stuff tho

Oh yeah? So just get the hose and suck from the other end?
That would take ages but wouldn't it? Cos if I can only transfer a mouthful into a jerycan that would take like 4 hours to extract half a tank I reckon. Or have I misunderstood you? hehe :)

haha yeah it would take awhile to suck the tank dry
*EDIT* when the petrol starts to come through the pipe it will normally keep coming out until it cant grab any from the end inside the tank
so you only have to get it started

i dont think he means u do mouthfulls at a time as u may die before u can use the fuel, i think when u suck the fuel it starts coming out, it will continue coming until its empty, i may be wrong but thats wat i have been told....
how long would half a tank take? im sure i could get some westies from my town to suck that tank dry in 5 mins :P

Haha lol
It should be alright!
One more question while we're here, the petrol in that tank has been sitting there since April this year. Is there any expiry on fuel? Should be right yeah?
Mr_Roberto

Fossil fuels are stored underground for millions of years so I'm guessing it should be alright for a few months.

Wouldn't it be easier to use the cars own fuel pump, just disconnect the hose going to the engine, somehow rig it into a jerry can or whatever, supply a constant 12v to fuel pump and bang, fuel will flow.

Hey for some reason, when i put the hose into the tank entrance it only goes into the tank a certain ammount then it stops and it's not reaching the fuel!
Is there some kind of security blocker thing in the fuel tank to stop people from sucking fuel out with a hose?

I'd suggest buying a fuel syphon however I assume that it could outweigh the cost of fuel in the tank.

OMG
I just found out that fuel tanks made after 1991 have something called a anti roll over valve. This valve is designed to prevent fuel from leaking out of the tank if the vehicle is overturned in an accident. The web site clearly states that "It also does an excellent job of preventing a hose from being slid down the filler neck and into the fuel".
ARGH
Is there any other way I can access the fuel in the tank without causing a die hard II explosion scene

surely you should be able to get under the car and disconnect the fuel line?
not 100% certain that it would work, but worth a look.
cheers,

I'd buy them a pack of winnie reds if they could do it for me haha but i'm in NSW!
I jacked up the car and had a look under it and there's like a bolt thing in the tank but it's like a solid one and wont budge.
Might try to disconnect the fuel line and refer to the workshop manual.
Would it be hard to disconnec the fuel lines?

Go through the workshop manual to see if the bolt does come loose....SHould be there to be loosened.
Or else id just disconnect a fuel line

apparently if u shoot a hole in the fuel tank to make a hole for the petrol to come out should work.....

it wont go bad as such but the fuel will seperate, a good shake up will fix that up tho

thats not a drain plug thats a mounting bolt for the fuel pump

^^^ is going to be the easyest to get out, there will be a diagnostics plug on the right some where with a black n white wire, provide power to that, and ya!

Can you access the fuel tank under the rear seat like in the third gens?. Just take the plate off and you can clearly see the fuel. Again, this works for 3rd gen, dunno about 2nd's

I am amazed you guys don't know how a siphon works, also that you thought your could just stick a tube into your tank.
For got sakes the car has a fuel pump! Just give it 12V and stick the fuel rail into your bottle and let it run till it's dry.

I'm all for using the car's fuel pump as the syphon. Just hook it up to the car battery (OMG 12v) and disconnect the fuel line from under the car/near the injectors/off the fuel pump if you have to.
As for whether the fuel is still good, try and light it. If it burns its good. Otherwise its probably not that good. :D
Not all of it mind you.

Haha it's all good I broke open the fuel tank with a chisel and water (so no sparks or else ba boom) and got the hose, sucked some out (got a burning mouth after that) and ended up getting most of it out! WOOHOO!
Might try extract some more tomorrow cos i know there's some left! Just my mum the party pooper came out and started rambling on about meddling with the car and i'm not a mechanic blah blah blah
Oh, btw! Thanks for all your help I didn't think i would get this much replies! Hehe

Why didn't ya just drill a hole in the bottom most corner,
then just put a pan under it to catch the fuel dropping out? :P

I would have either taken a fuel hose off or taken out the 'drain plug' that most fuel tanks have.

I know its late for a comment but what happens when the engine runs out of fuel to it? you just need the 12v to it as everyone said.

god these people are so.... well anyway i have done this many times.
as someone else stated use the cars own fuel pump. unbolt ur fuel inlet hose off the fuel rail and put it in a jerry can etc. then connect power from the battery to ur fuel pump test relay which is located against the firewall in the engine bay right where the wiring harness comes out. switch on ignition and away she pumps.
i cant beleive there is 5 pages of spam and not one entirely helpful answer to this yet
