To keep
the not yet named TP has got more good bits than bad
even the tyres are round :bowrofl:
rust is surface mostly less bog the better

looks to be a fairly sound base to work with.Once im done fitting the elante kit and painting my tp i can start on the 3g honda prelude i scored for 100 bucks(comes with a blown five speed manual). I could have offered the guy i bought it off a carton of piss and he would of taken it but i already offerd the 100 a he took it without any hesitation.
lots of fun to be had in the next few months:D

hehe my car ran out of petrol once cos the globe for the warning light was blown. And i had to run out of petrol just to find that out:D
the interior looks to be in good nick (well compared to mine)

I found the radio - thanks to the previous owner for removing it and saving me the trouble (previous, previous owner)
I like the spare tyre a grand rally I need to paint the rim black How many spare wheels should I bring down, I got plenty:D
hey no jack or tyre spanner have to look in the shed :D I'll have a look for a replacement

all everyone talks about first gen fuel comsumption well this tp hasnt gone anywhere and the bugger ran out of gas had to add some I didnt get 11 ltr/ 100km more like .2
I thought theses things had a fuel warning light I put 5 litres in on saturday

Checked the dissy ,spark plugs ,started the rust work, fitted the front parker light
cleaned and refitted the fuel system ,seats in and glovebox ( no money under the seats:rant: Yeah, I noticed that too lol ,added mismatching floor mats, cleaned all the oil out of the air filter and Airflow sensor ,[/QUOTE]

herman
19-12-2006, 06:45 PM
How much oil getting blown into the air filter? Mine does the same thing(blow by?) plus blows oil out the dip stick tube onto the radiator. Engine is still quite crisp and responsive, no blue or white smoke, but sometimes above 100kph it sprays out heaps of oil other times it sprays none. Either way its not long before the wrecker beckons

herman

Is the crank case pressure valve the PCV?

coldamus
22-12-2006, 05:20 AM
Is the crank case pressure valve the PCV?

Yes, it is the brass fitting at the end of the rocker cover near the oil filler cap. Take the hose off it and unscrew the PCV. It has a ball inside that acts as a one way valve. When you shake it, you should be able to hear the ball rattling. If not, it is stuck and there's your problem.

Wash it in petrol or some other suitable solvent. If its really full of muck, use a cotton bud, match stick or similar to help clean it out. Once clean, you should be able to blow through it in one direction but not the other.

It should only take a few minutes to remove, clean and replace and can make quite a difference.

Ol' Fart
23-12-2006, 09:26 AM
They are all within 10% so thats fine.

PM sent :D

herman
23-12-2006, 11:06 AM
Is there any after market valve that could be fitted into the rocker cover to help bleed off excess pressure?

Dave262
23-12-2006, 09:34 PM
I would definitely also recommend the cheap fuel filter in-line with the PCV lines - I have them on mine and the they work amazingly well. The throttle body never needs cleaning now - it's always sparkling clean thanks to those filters :D

Only problem is, they seem to fill up fairly fast with oil, and the stupid rubber hoses keep splitting... just an annoying inconvenience though, especially when they split and i end up spending an afternoon cleaning engine oil again!

Nice to see someone else going back to the first gens though - good luck with it! :D

herman
24-12-2006, 10:09 AM
Not sure it was due to the oil but my throttle body went crazy and eventually packed up as I was driving through the Sydney harbour tunnel during peak hour. Engine started acting like it was using water contaminated fuel. Bunny hopping, reving but no power. All this at the point in the tunnel where it dips down before the climb out. Nightmare!

24-12-2006, 03:26 PM
you know its called the transaxle computer unit = tcu

thats all ok I will reset the TCU after the engine comes out for a rebuild

dude it was a joke, and either way its still a ecu (electronic control unit) its just used for the trans

magna buff
24-12-2006, 06:02 PM
so far I have come across 4 inlet manifold gasket failures

the water passes into the head at two places from the inlet manifold to the head
instructions say to apply sealant to the gasket near the two ports of the water jackets

If the gasket leaks due to corrosion or other failure...
the water may enter the intake manifold onto to the combustion chambers

one could assume steam /water and fuel would mix in those ports just at the wrong time

magna buff
27-12-2006, 11:03 AM
raining so what better to do but start
easy done
undo heater and waterpump hoses...dissy out
undo inlet maniolds nuts and plenum support bracket under the car at the back of the block
undo exhaust manifold nuts and engine exhaust bracket support bolt

push both inlet and exhaust manifolds clear of the head and they drop down for clearence
everything else stays togeather
lift head off

as in pic 1

pic 2 lots of oil consumption - the valves tell a story

the engine has had a thrashing and lack of servicing approx 200 000 kms only done
head hasn't been off for ages yet chains and cogs are good ???
the bores are worn
noticable sharp lip feels like (10 thou) on all cylinders ---at the very top of the compression stroke .. Lip on front part of all the bores not at the back

moving on the block will need rebuild

herman
27-12-2006, 12:04 PM
When I pulled the head off mine the first time I left the inlet and exhaust manifolds on thinking it would be a time saver. Talk about awkward and heavy! I had it half off when it caught the timing chain sprocket and I started to freak that the sprocket would fall off the sprocket stand, I was doing this job on the side of the road and I doubt I have the ability to do a timing chain job as well.
Just did a straight gasket slap with no pressure test or surface finish trying to save money. I put it all back together, started the engine and discovered it was a cracked head not just a blown gasket. Had a gutfull so took it to a mechanic who did a 'proper job', welded up the head, stem seals, resurfaced, etc, one year guarantee. Drove it down to Melbourne and it blew 40km short of destination. Did gasket #3 myself with the full pressure test/resurface and its still going. Stripping it down #3, found that the mechanic had done a bit of a dodgy.

Dave262
28-12-2006, 04:06 PM
Man I don't think i've ever seen that much oil and crap inside a cylinder before! When I pulled the head off mine to replace the head gasket, the tops of the cylinders were just slightly brown, same with the valves! Mind u my magna has only done about 118,000km lol...

Seems that many people who have owned magnas just thrash them and drive em into the ground without servicing.. it constantly amazes me how they keep going even with leaking gaskets, lack of oil and coolant and smoking like crazy with collapsed exhausts and clogged injectors!!!

Anyways looks like a hell of a job ahead on fixing up that engine! Looks like it's basically been pumping oil straight into the cylinders! :P

Good luck!

Hey magnabuff, what engine mounts would u recommend getting for a TP? If the repco ones suck too, I really wanna know where to get some decent ones.. both the side mounts on mine are gone and it's making horrid clunks whenever i accelerate - the front and rear mounts are both reasonably new and in good condition still. Just those side ones i think are putting too much stress on the front and back ones tho so i wanna fix it asap.

Ol' Fart

I think the shiney bits are not supposed to be there

remember this engine was quiet and no chain rattles

good on repco fitted new chains and guides

problem is the tensioner was out to the Max

Thats what my tensioner/chain guide looked like, check the engine for other oil related problems.

when i did my power steering boots, it took a hell of a long time to get the new boot on.when i would go to push on the new boot the edge would catch and would fold in , very frustrating. one side to 30 mins of fiddeling to get it on. but when did the other side i found it usefull to fold the boot inside out on the end of it then i could push it on and flick the overturn edge back.

I can't remember what Casper's got already, Ray, but I just removed the (perfectly functional, and in excellent condition) original radio/cassette deck from the TP. If you're interested, it's yours :-)

Also have the better version in the TM, but it's not in as good a condition as the TP one...

What if u added an elante spoiler on the back and got the 2nd one (with the word casper) air brushed on top of the spoiler. for the width and legnth of the spoiler maybe?? just an idea. but as for me i think it's tacky putting stickers on, or maybe i just grew out of that phaze hehe. but a bit of tasefull airbrushing is the bussiness.

with the balance system and timing
the need for two chains
it has never been tried using two belts on a 4 cylinder

Do you have any info handy for fixing cables to petrol doors opening properly. I got stuck the other day nearly out of fuel and took me 20 minutes to get the door open to pump fuel in. I had to get into the cable through the boot and pull it by hand. What a hassle. I think the wires have stretched or need adjusting?

Appreciate anything you got
kenno

magna buff
10-04-2007, 05:14 AM
there is a need to secure the outer cable a beter way inside the boot

oiling of the inner cable could b done on the hinge and floor lever and door catch as well

you could shorten the outer cable if it was new and that gives you a longer inner cable

you pull through the inner cut the outer slightly then push inner back through and connect up

seems to be a fault over looked by mitsi ... will give it more thought:doubt:

casper-- almost finished the mechanicals

Buffy,

I have two batteries here, both of which *were* ok, but have sat around a while. They've both just been charged. I don't have a load tester yet, but you're welcome to one of them if you can ascertain one or both of them are ok :-)

Buffy,

Sunday's no good - we'll be out camping from Saturday until Monday...

However, I do have some running around to do today and tomorrow - need to source / buy an air compressor, engine hoist/stand, and some other tools - if I'm coming out near your way, I'll give you a hoy. Otherwise, I can leave the batteries out for you, if all else fails ;-)

Oh - they were already charged overnight, last week. They both got about 12-16 hours on a 2700mAH charger. If you like (and don't have (or have access to) a load tester), take them both - if they're both ok, give me one back :-)

Cheers,
Mattt.

solid colour so no need for clear coat now
thinners
undercoat
prepwash
metho
clean rags

air
no bog needed

wet sanded

magna buff

bonnet was the solid white so assume acrylic laqure

thats where the problem is

sanded off all down to the undercoat

prep
sanded 800 grit
washed with water
prewash
metho
sprayed the undercoat
used one of each as required
high pressure gun / a low pressure gun /air brush/

was a ok left for two days

sanded again 1000 grits
top coat white

3 days later all split like pack ice down to the metal in places
top coat bonded with the undercoat but lifted from the panel in places
other parts the top coat didnt hold at all peeled

will prob have to go to bare metal

Madmagna
02-03-2008, 01:46 PM
Acrylic will be ok as a base for most paints, most likely someone has painted the bonnet in cheap enamel.

If you take it back with an air sander using say 320, take it back to the black electrocoat, use a good high fill primer, dust with any black paint, use this as a guide coat, wet sand with 320 to get smooth and flat and then with 600. You will not need to rum off again just paint.

If you sand too fine then you will have paint peel as there is nothing for the paint to key to.

Forget the metho as well, do not know who told you to do this as metho leave a residue this can be some of your problem.

I asume you are using acrylic?

Who is wasting paint? If properly prepared you will have no issues.

Mate, if you are not sure of what is under it, use an islolator base coat, this will seal all the previous coats
