Hello,
I have a 99 Diamante (verada). The antilock light on my dash was showing me code 13 (rear right ABS speed sensor). These are known to go out on the US Diamante. I installed a brand new one. The fitting went well. So I started her up and the antilock light stayed on for maybe 5 sec, then went off. I shut the engine off, started it up again and the light blinked like I was checking the code (diagnostic mode) then went off. Then started a third time and it stayed off, and I took it for a 5 minute cruise and then shut it down for the night. Next day- I start it up and the light stays on (like I have a problem). So, I shut it down and then start it up...light stays off now. I started it again, the light starts flickering.....WHAT GIVES!?? IT KEEPS GOING OFF, THEN HAUNTING ME ON EVERY OTHER START-UP!!!!
Do I need a cold reset of the ECU? I know in the manual it says to erase codes by disconnecting the negative cable for 10 minutes. Does this go for the antilock light?
Does this mean after you replace the defective part you have to clear the code manualy by resetting the ecu by disconnecting the neg cable?.... or will it learn the new settings on its own without resetting ECU (disconnecting the neg cable?)How long would the car take to learn the new setup on its own? I heard if you do not do a cold reset, it takes like 40 start ups before it can take the new config and clear the light, is this true?
I am trying not to disconnect the negative cable, since my radio has a code (without the code- no radio or cd). This is the reason why I did not just try to disconnect the cable and see if it works.....
I know some people out there may think I am crazy but........:bowrofl:
I appreciate any information regarding this.
Cheers!
AFAIK the ECU goes through a system check everytime the car starts. This is proven by the airbag / ABS etc display on the dash flashing or being on briefly and then turned off once all is ok.
The ECU will store fault codes for later reference, but you don't need to 'clear' the codes once a fault has been rectified to stop the warning light displaying.
Looks like there is still some kind of intermittant problem.

Just curious, Is it definitly some kind of intermittant problem? Why is there even a way to clear codes? Shouldn't they make it so you can't clear the codes, unless you repair the part...that would make more sense. Let me know what your opinion is.
Thanks.
Cheers.
The codes are stored the ECU so it makes it easier to diagnose itermittant problems. You can then clear the codes and see if it logs the fault again so you know if you have fixed the problem.
I would definately reset the ECU to clear the code and then do a diagnosis again.
You can call Mitsubishi here in Australia (i can get the number for you if you like) and get the radio code no worries.

Should I disconnect the negative cable for just 10 minutes or longer towards 2-3hrs+ to make sure I fully drain all power in the system?
Great, yes whenever you have some free time please let me know the phone number. Do you know if they just need the VIN to get the code, or do they need me to give them the serial number off the radio itself? I appreciate it!

Also, if I disconnect the negative cable to reset the ECU.....will I have to let the ECU relearn everything (driving habits, emissions etc)? Do I have to do anything special or is there anything I should look out for when resetting the ECU.......or just drive as I normally do?
Thanks a lot!
Cheers!
Ok try calling Mitsubishi on +61 1300 13 12 11. This may not work outside of Australia, so if not let me know and i'll get a local number for the Headquaters herw in SA.
Yes they just need the VIN. Tell them where you live and you won't have any problems getting it, or alternativly you can try emailing them (make sure you explain where you live too) at http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com.au/mitssite/jsp/pages/company/contactus/contactus.jsp
Disconnecting the battery for 1hr will be fine and no, there is nothing special to do while the ECU is in 'learning' mode and the variables it has to work with are very limited (contrary to popular belief).

THE ECU IS A VERY POWERFUL SYSTEM IT WILL LEARN YOUR COMPLETE DRIVING STYLE !:bowrofl: :bowrofl: :bowrofl:
Sorry had to, after reading some previous posts on ECU "learning"....
But seriously, thanks a lot. I really appreciate your help. Is it possible that I can disconnect the ABS sensor harness, then reconnect it and then start the car up and let it idle for 10-15 minutes and it will cure it----or not a chance? I can tell you that after installing the sensor, initially I just started it up and then shut it off letting it idle for maybe 2 minutes max. Please be honest, let me know if I am totally wrong as I do not know much about electronics.
Thanks,
Cheers!
I'm certainly no expert either, but i'm pretty sure you need to disconnect the ECU as simply unplugging the ABS harness/fuse etc will cause the ECU to think there is a problem the the sensor anyway.

WS manual says to disconnet the battery for at least 10 seconds to clear the codes or you can take it to you local mitsubishi dealer and can be cleared using the MUTT. I believe that some safety related codes cannot be erased by by dissconnecting the battery(not 100% sure) but am sure that I have read that somewhere, and in that case the MUTT will have to be used. Hope this has been of some help.
